    Damn, broke a carboy today

I have used one of these for every carboy I have. Makes things much safer and easier. Like others above, I lift with the handle, but then as soon as I can get my fingers under the bottom I lift with both hands. The netting works well with my plastic carboys. Crossing my fingers, haven't dropped...

Michigan-grown (or Great Lakes) Grape Juice Concentrates

Following. I'm interested in probably the same thing. Guess it depends on the cost of I bite. 🙂

    Dragon Blood versus Skeeter Pee

Honestly, it still has the skeeter Pee taste, but everyone who tried it really liked it. The fruit notes offset the lemon nicely. I think the next batch I make will be that one again. I might go with 1 qt less lemon and add more fruit, but why mess with a good result? :)

    Dragon Blood versus Skeeter Pee

It was a 5 gallon batch. And as it turned out, I finished it following the DB instructions. Turned out awesome! So great it's almost gone. 😅

    Should I just bottle?

It's about 2 months old since I started this batch. It's already back sweetened, so I actually think racking to a 5 gallon and enjoying the leftovers early is probably my best option.

    Should I just bottle?

I have a really good smelling black cherry wine that I have already backsweetened and is just waiting a couple months before I bottle. It's been a couple weeks but the 6 gallon batch is a little shy of six gallons and is only filling to about an inch below the sides before the glass starts...

    Melthley plum tree

Hi. I planted a couple 5 gallon melthley plum trees. I was told that plum wine is amazing and found these on the home Depot website. Not expecting much in terms of fruit production for the next 2-4 years, but I'm hoping it will be worth the wait. Anyone have experience with wine made from this...

    label your wine

I make labels printed on plain paper, cut and put under a shrink wrap. I really grew tired of removing adhesive from sticky labels to reuse my bottles. I sometimes print one to put one sheet on my carboy so I know what will be bottled.

Can yeast slurry be stored for later use?

I have a fun tasting dark cherry wine that is about a week from being racked to a carboy leaving that wonderful lees behind for making skeeter Pee. Thing is I have a lot going on that weekend. I wondered if anyone has had success putting that slurry into a container and keeping it in a...

I'm alive! Grape growing 2023 begins

I am very interested in starting a vine in my back yard. I have about 40' in one line available. Where did you get your plantings? Online or a local garden center? I think I want grapes for a Riesling, but not sure. What kind of grapes are you growing?

    Other Riesling kit recommendations

That's awesome. I'll see if I can find the juice. That sounds like what I've been doing already! 🙂

    Other Riesling kit recommendations

I'm pretty new to this, but I have about 6 batches completed or in progress and am pleased with the outcome of my meads, dragon blood and skeeter Pee variations. But my wife enjoys Riesling wine, and I have no experience with making wine from grapes. I don't have a grape vine and know it will...

    Chlorine based cleaners and wines

Warning: Newbie question... On the subject of corks, do you soak or spray with star San solution before bottling? Or just cork it and forget about it for a few years? Lol

Can my dragon blood skeeter Pee be salvaged?

That article is great. I'll keep it for future reference. I am going to give the copper sulfate a try. It is after all, 6 gallons of wine and if there's a chance to salvage it... Why not? If it doesn't help, well then down the drain it goes. Worth a try anyway. Definitely a lesson learned.

Can my dragon blood skeeter Pee be salvaged?

Well the liquid in the quart jar actually smelled foul, like something spoiled. I can tell you that will never happen again. If I haven't tasted to see how it is right now, then it won't get added. (Hard lesson) But it was really bad smelling. So while I added about 3 cups of the bad stuff to...

Can my dragon blood skeeter Pee be salvaged?

Hey @BigDaveK, Thanks for the reply. How did it end with the one you added before tasting? Just wondered. The carboy is filled right to about 1.5 inches from the stopper, so very little headspace. But I don't see anything ugly forming at the top of the wine. I just wonder if time or something...

Can my dragon blood skeeter Pee be salvaged?

I'm a newbie, just started this hobby last October. I'm learning as I go, but made what I think is a fatal flaw in my DB-SP batch. I had things going well after primary and it went into secondary carboy. I had about a quart more than would fit, so I put the extra in a quart jar. I added the...

    DangerDave's Dragon Blood Wine

Curious about the Pentek filter you mentioned. I see that it's a water filter, but how do you use it? Are you using a pump that runs it through the filter? Do you run water thru ahead and behind to not leave wine sitting in the filter? Do you change the filter between wines or just thoroughly...

    DangerDave's Dragon Blood Wine

I found minimal sweetening and drinking at room temp was better for me. Chilling it seemed to make the sweetness lessened. And like others, I bought gloves to make the whole process of squeezing the bag have less of a chance of bacteria and my hands didn't turn red! But you should have plenty...

    DangerDave's Dragon Blood Wine

I'm in step 5 of my second batch, so I can't speak from experience. But I found as I squeeze the mesh bag with each day or got smaller and smaller. So there must have been some benefit to the daily squeeze. Also I learned there was no benefit to snapping down the lid except making me work on my...
