The oak chips plugged up my syphon hose 3 times. I do have the cap on to stop it, but it didn't help. I lost some wine due to mixing up the trub on the bottom. How do I avoid that in the future?

Where I live in Ontario, Canada kits are many times cheaper than buying it. Vineyard down the road sells their 750 ml bottles of wine for $26 each. It most certainly is better than my kit wine, but not a chance in hell I will pay that price. I am slowly gravitating to higher priced kits just to...

I didn't realize that temperature was that big of a factor.

I racked to a carboy and moved it to a much warmer room. Going real good now. I didn't add any yeast yet.

Do I add more yeast? I tasted it and it is very sweet. First time with this problem. It is still bubbling, but slowed down a lot.

It has been 2 weeks and it is still 1.018. This is a Costco chardonnay kit. Rack to secondary or leave it?

Mine was too hot, so I wrapped a towel a couple of times around the pail and then used the heat belt. Kept it at 72 F.

Been making beer since 1979 so I thought I would make some wine. Kits so far just to get the process down. I like it so far. I met a fellow beer maker and he had a huge inventory of home made wine. I think he makes more wine than beer by the look of it.

Yes, I agree. We just asked for a Chardonnay and this was the price we got. We left, came back 5 weeks later to bottle. Done.

I just don't think the price was worth it for what I got. Most of the BYO wine places here in Ontario are expensive, that is just the way it is. That experience made me want to make my own at home.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will slowly make my way up in price to see what I like best. I do think at least for now I will stick to the kits. One thing I have noticed is there is a lot of different wine kits to choose from :)
