I have some old vines growing in my back yard. They are all bunched together, and one is not even growing anymore. What is the best way to remove them completely? I want to order some new vines from double a vineyards and plant them next spring.

I used a shovel to dig this one up. If you have an axe and find that there are roots too thick to cut with the shovel, expose them with the shovel and whack them with the axe. One picture is a 25 year old French hybrid vine I dug up. It's the really big vine. The other, smaller vine is a 4 year old muscadine I dug up. You can see one of the roots that is thicker than my soaker hose. I did both of those with a shovel.
