    Alternatives to Vinmetrica Solutions

For a home wine maker the Vinmentrica solutions, only good for 6 months, are very expensive. Is there any source of powdered versions or smaller amounts of these chemicals? Can I used the Milwaukee pH calibration powders? I am interested in doing both SO2 and pH testing. Thanks, David

Other Who makes great Argentinian Malbec kits now?

I just checked vineco, winexpert, winekitz, and rjs and only rjs seemed to have any argentinian kits listed, and the only malbec kit was a malbec syrah blend. Cellar Craft used to make one that had decent reviews here but vineco has none listed for any of their brands. I made a Chilean...

Other How do you pitch your yeast?

I am still trying to figure out why my wine kits rarely finish as low as they are supposed to according to instructions. For me, they have most often been finishing at 0.998 to 1.000 when the instructions say 0.992. Needless to say most of my wines turn out a little sweet tasting. The last...

Other How long do you agree your wine and how much if it?

I've heard that most people drink thirty ruined young regardless of recommended drinking age. I am pretty good about getting to the recommended aging period with probably 28 bottles out of 29 or 30 with most kits. There have been some that I've not had many left by the recommended age though...

Cellar Craft Cellar Craft Marsanne Viognier Raissane - 2011 Limited Edition Kit

A year ago I found one of the last boxes of this kit after some calling around. Apparently it had been a small run and there wasn't the standard amount of kits to be had. Anyhow I felt lucky. And lazy. I finally got around to opening it in September and found that it was missing...

    WineXpert WE Blackberry Port

My second WE port and the second one to stop fermenting early :po It finished at 1022. That is not the reason I am posting today. When I made the WE raspberry chocolate port I didn't have quite enough to put back the port I removed when adding the f-pack. Since my blackberry port nearly...

    DIY Temperature control

Depending on your skill level this looks like a great project! Personally I am using a ceramic space heater in a small room. The electricity cost alone has me thinking about making something like this. http://www.twopossibilities.com/2011/01/26/homebrew-temperature-controller/

Degassing in the secondary or after bottling

My first few kits had a LOT of flaws. Fermentation temperature was the worst of those problems. When the kit instructions give you a range, the top end of that range is the target. For WE they say 18-24*C so aim for 24*C. The second problem was that I don't stir enough to degass. I was...

Final SG never as low as the kit instructions say

I am trying to figure out why my wines rarely finish with the right specific gravity. If a kit's instructions indicate a finishing sg of 0.992 to 0.996 my wines usually finish at 0.998 to 1.000. I did find out that my temperature was too low. WE instructions say use 18-24*C and the place I...
