    Help with choosing kit

The Shiraz/Cabernet blend is at the top of my list, and that’s a good price. One last question - is it better to get a kit with more juice or less juice plus skins or grapes?

    Help with choosing kit

I’m just looking for red kits right now. My wife would love a Riesling or maybe gewurtzraminer, but she’s pregnant and not drinking for a while.

    Help with choosing kit

I know this comes up a lot, but figured that I’d ask for help anyway. So far I have made 2 cheap kit wines, batches of Skeeter Pee and Dragon’s Blood, and a few 1 gallon batches of fruit wine. I’m trying to decide what to make next. I’d like to stay at or under $100 for the kit. I’d like to...

    How clear is “clear”?

I degassed it last night by transferring between carboys with the AIO pump. It’s clear, just very dark.

    How clear is “clear”?

Is that in the carboy or pulling out a sample in a wine thief? I can even see the flashlight on my phone through the whole carboy right now.

    How clear is “clear”?

I’m waiting for my first 6 gallon batch to clear. However, the wine is extremely dark, so it’s difficult to tell how clear it is. Previously, I did 1/2 and 1 gallon batches, as well as 6 gallon batches of SP and Dragon’s Blood. Those were all easy to see through since they were much lighter in...

    Other Tweeking Cheap Kits

How long is everyone aging their Fontana wine kit? I racked mine for aging about a week and a half ago, but just curious what’s the earliest this will taste decent.

Accidentally added all the lemon juice at beginning

It seems like everything came out ok. After I racked it from my primary to a carboy to let it clear, I ended up with almost 2 liters more than the carboy will hold. I drank it cloudy and it was pretty good.

Primary fermenter for 1 gallon batches?

They were all out when I went unfortunately. I went to Rubbermaid’s commercial website and it says HDPE. So it’s a 2 gallon food grade HDPE bucket for $5. Not terrible. I ordered a few on Amazon with something else I was ordering.

Primary fermenter for 1 gallon batches?

I want to try out a few random wines, but I don’t want to make 5/6 gallons of it until I know how it will turn out. What do you use for fermenting 1 gallon batches? My local store has 1 gallon glass jugs, but I’d want something a little bigger in case of foaming. I plan on using the 1 gallon...

Dragon Blood - Throwing in the towel (this time)

I’m in the process of making my first batch - fermentation is complete at this point. It doesn’t smell good, but I wouldn’t necessarily call it bad. It reminds me of cleaning up a bar at the end of the night. It does taste pretty bad right now, but I’m waiting for it to clear before...

    Bulk aging question

I’m coming up to the end of my first wine kit being made. I plan on bulk aging it in a carboy, mainly because I don’t have enough wine bottles or a corker yet. I have a few questions: 1) When do I add the fining agents? The instructions say add them once fermentation is complete, but not to add...

Accidentally added all the lemon juice at beginning

I’m really missing the mark on this one! The extra yeast went into overdrive and fermented down to 1.02 before I added the second yeast energizer and nutrient. It smells great, foams more than anything I’ve made so far. My fermenter has 3 gallons of headspace, and it overflowed when I used a...

How many gallons of Lon D's Skeeter Pee have been made?

    I have 6 of Skeeter Pee and 6 of Dragon’s Blood in carboys at the moment 3347 + 12 = 3359

    Capping as opposed to corking

Is there any drawback to bottling in beer bottles with bottle caps as opposed to wine bottles with corks? None of the wine I’m making at this time is meant to be aged for a long time. I already have a collection of 16 and 22 oz beer bottles, a bottle capper, and a bunch of caps.

Accidentally added all the lemon juice at beginning

Yeah, cheap and quick is why I decided to make it. I have a pinot noir kit and a batch of dragons blood going, and those went off without a hitch. So I was a little nervous when the skeeter pee didn’t seem like it was fermenting. I don’t know if the second yeast starter did anything or not, but...

Accidentally added all the lemon juice at beginning

It’s bubbling like it should be, so all is good.

Accidentally added all the lemon juice at beginning

I decided to make a yeast starter and add more yeast. I now have a little bit of bubbling this morning, so I guess that it worked. I do have some “stuff” floating on top that I haven’t had in any of my other wines. It appears to be yeast, or at least it’s the same color. Does Skeeter Pee make...

Accidentally added all the lemon juice at beginning

How visible is fermentation in Skeeter Pee once it starts? Last night made 48 hours since I pitched the yeast slurry, and I’m not seeing anything as of this morning. The Dragon’s Blood I started at the same time is foaming and has obvious bubbling.

Accidentally added all the lemon juice at beginning

Thanks. I figured it would be ok, but I don’t want to waste my only yeast slurry. Slightly related - would the Skeeter Pee turn out OK with the yeast added directly to it instead of the extra steps? Just in case this doesn’t work.
