    Shoots keep breaking - marquette

Looks like those leaves are really dark green, have you been fertilizing a lot? If so, not sure if that would have anything to do with the shoots breaking. But I definitely second the idea of growing Marquette on a VSP or even low wire cordon. My Marquette want to go straight up, yet this...

Is this guy out of business now? Pat

Late December a good time to prune?

I'd wait until at least late January in your neck of the woods?

Thoughts on cab franc, reisling, dornfelder, lemberger, zweigelt

I'm growing Zweigelt, Dornfelder and Cab Franc on a low wire VSP. Not sure if they will produce well here or not, but I'm giving them a try. I'll be covering the vines with snow in the winter. I live in Upper Michigan

New cold climate varieties coming in 2015

Thanks, I just got an e-mail from him that you can only order vines if you live at or south of the 45th parallel, so that unfortunately leaves me out I guess. I'm about 50 miles north of it. Too bad, sounds exactly like the kind of wine I like. Pat

    Deer eating leaves

I use "liquid fence" on my apple trees and it works like a charm, but after a week or so, or after a rain I refresh it again.

Recently completed backyard vineyard in NW Washington

What I do is to hang a sweaty shirt on a fence or something else to get it about 4-5' off the ground. I change it out every other day and move it around a little, works great at keeping them at bay. Pat

    Leaf puckering

Did you happen to fertilize recently? They almost look like they got too much nitrogen.

    Chateau Michaelena Vineyard

Wow, that is a real shame. I can't believe even the cordons were killed. My Marquettes are in their 3rd year now and they have put out a ton of growth already and at least 20-25 clusters per vine, but I snipped off most all the clusters, I'm leaving a few just to see how the grapes do this year...

    VSP for all grape varieties?

OK thanks, I think I'm going to start training new cordons this year to the VSP and/or low wire VSP. Pat

    VSP for all grape varieties?

Hi, question for some of the guru's.... Is it OK to grow all your grape varieties with the VSP? I know some varieties, like Marquette, will supposedly have reduced yields, but every grape I'm growing, including my table grapes, ALL want to just go straight up from the top wire. The other...

    Cruel Irony

You're a lot kinder than I. They would all have been dead, I hate raccoons, nothing but trouble.

I screwed up - pruned for VSP, want TWC

I'm not sure about Leon Millot, but Marquette and PP are supposed to be able to take at least -30F with no problem. If I had vines that dies to the ground over winter I would be pulling them out. Why plant vines that are likely to be killed again at some point?

    Oh dear

This doesn't look good at all, but my vines are still sound asleep....

    Where to purchase grape vines

Avoid Red Dog Vineyards, very unreliable and he had a lot of diseased vines last summer.

New vineyard question about vine selection

I wouldn't try to fruit them this year. Get them trained to your wires and let them build back some root growth. JMHO Pat

    Oh dear

April and May look exactly the same. So, unfortunately, if it does get warm early and buds break and flowers bloom, there is probably a 100% chance that a few cold fronts will drop in and deliver some hard frosts before mid- May. I've never had my apple trees get hit with a late frost, it just...
