I started an RJS Caramel port and an RJS Coffee port yesterday. I was disappointed with the beginning SG of both. The caramel was 1.095 and the coffee was 1.096. I guess I will chapitalize and possibly fortify to get the final abv up.
 
I've done two of the RJS ports and both of them are REALLY low, IMHO. The second one, I step fed and fortified to get it to about 18%. It is MUCH better than the first. Granted, they are two different wines, but I think the higher ABV helps with the sweetness.
 
Yes I agree, I have made both of these before and they are very sweet if you don't get the abv up.
