Champlain Valley - Grapemans' vineyard - Planting to small winery

Interesting. I should have realized that, but I get so used to irrigation being a major issue in growing grapes here that I forget that there are plenty of places in the country that actually experience that thing yall call moisture during July and August.

Champlain Valley - Grapemans' vineyard - Planting to small winery

Rich, one of the things I just noticed is that I don't see any visible irrigation equipment. Is it not needed in your area?

Looks great, Appleman. Wow...to get 80 feet of tree around here, I'd have to cut down 8 trees.

    AAA=Human Moron

That would have been an automatic Darwin winner. Please say you won't ever do that again. When I read that, what few hairs I had left on my head stood straight up and fell off.

    Somebody left the gate open!!

Wow...what a year. Wildfires in our area have consumed over 50,000 acres over the past three days. We freeze on Monday and then burn up through the rest of the week. My vineyard is ok so far, but several others have been completely destroyed. Two towns nearby have been completely consumed...yes...

    Somebody left the gate open!!

One of you guys up north forgot to close that dang gate. Another late freeze here last night...down to the mid 20's...after a week of 80s. Most of the vineyards in north and west Texas are reporting 75-100% losses...me included. This was actually our third later-than-usual freeze in the past 2...

    Blueberries in Peril...

Good luck Chopper. Had a late freeze here this past week and it hit most of the vineyards a bit hard. Hope for some wind to help out there.

Help, thrown into the deep end

Eight feet is perfect for your area. Good luck, and I can't wait to see the pictures of your new "babies".

Help, thrown into the deep end

Coaster...Both of those varieties are great in your area. Like Appleman said, looks like you have rooted cuttings. Hopefully you have at least two buds at the top of the cutting. The best way to plant these in our neighborhood is to dig a hole about a foot deep and eight inches in diameter...

Al...I've been seeing more about the flex tanks, but have not tried them yet. Any suggestions on where to get them? Advantages and disadvantages?

    Bud Break

Bud break for aout a week now in the Cabernet and Blanc Du Bois. The Cynthiana is just starting to look "interested". We had a near 2 inch rain this week which will help immensely, but we are still technically in a severe drought.

    Howdy from Decatur, Texas

Hi yall. I've been lurking around for a couple of years really enjoying the great info that gets passed around on this site. I hope to participate more in the future. I've been making wine for a few years, mostly from Mustang grapes and other fruit, eventually planning to go commercial. We...

    I blame Appleman & Waldo

Those calves are really gonna love those grapes, mjd. Glad to finally post something here, Appleman. I've been lurking for a couple of years...you know how shy us Texans are. Anyhow, I've enjoyed reading about your work with your grapes and wines. I'll try to be more active, especially in...

    I blame Appleman & Waldo

mjd, the most common PD resistant grapes grown in Texas are the Black Spanish (Lenoir, Favorite) and Blanc Du Bois. There are quite a number of these grown down around your more humid environment. You can check with R.L. Winters at Fairhaven Vineyards for a good source for these grapes...they...
