I'm in the process of placing a small kitchen in my winemaking area.

Is it safe to use a stainless steel counter top, or will the metabisulfite slowly destroy the smooth surface?

I would think that SS would be great. To keep it clean and sanitized, I would wipe it down with K-meta solution, rinse with water and dry it. I have a SS funnel and wine thief and that is how I treat them. No problems. In fact, I have been watching Craig's list and other sites for a restaurant that is remodeling or closing down to buy some SS kitchen equipment like a sink and work table.

I also have a SS funnel that sees KMETA regularly without incident. I think as long as you wipe it with wet water rag on occasion you won't see any problems.
