One of the few things government probably does better than private enterprise.

Statistically, there is an extremely low launch failure rate. There is a bunch of steel tossed into the sky every year in the USA, and Wallops alone launches a lot of flights. My thoughts were with the scientists who invested their time in the experiments that were lost, but nothing is 100% certain, not even whether you'll get to the end of your commute home without a wreck.

NASA had a lot of spectacular failures in its early years. At least it is private $'s going up in smoke.

Wonder if we pay even if it goes up in smoke?? Bet we put at least 50% down.

I wondered if that $200M rocket was insured

Space is a dangerous business. Even tried, test, and true launch systems will fail. It is not a matter of if a system fails, but when.
