Using the hydrometer

I read the sticky on how to use it but I have made a few batches of wine and the thing is always in the finish area on it when ever I use it. The pinot noir came out great but the syrah is what worries me, its in the finish zone and I am going to start racking it tomorrow or thursday.this is the one I have

forget the colors for now, just read the numbers. The closer to the bottom the higher the number.
Take a reading before the yeast is pitched then monitor it every few days untill it remains the same for three consecutive readings. Then your wine is dry.
When you say it's in the finish area, at what stage of the process was you checking it?
