Mine looks ugly too!

Joan what is the tool with the gauge on it next to the carboy? Are you holding out on us about some secret winemaking tool? Some type of vacumn degasser?

That is the Mighty Vac. It is a tool for bleeding brakes by creating a
vacuum. I just bought it and it works way better than the drill mounted
attachment. I bought mine at an auto parts store for $24.99. Harbor
Freight has them for $19.99 in cataloge or online. I paid $24.99 but
shipping and handling would even it out so! Very easy to use.

Oooops - Sorry Joan and Wade. I guess I had too many samples yesterday when I saw the picture.

That makes sense now. How long do you need to pump it to get all the gas out? I read yesterday about you killing two batteries to degas. Had you done that before you used the brake bleeder, or was that a reference to a previous batch?

OK how do you use your break line bleeder. I dont think the instructions would work on a carboy would they?

I dont like gas and I dont like the drill or the wisk my arm falls off.

The Brake bleeder comes with a bunch of fittings. You just pick the one
that fits in your bung, attach one end of the hoses that also comes
with the bleeder to the bleeeder and the other end to the bung fitting
asnd just squeeze until you reach 25 on the scale. Go slowly once you
get to about 15 as you dont want to suck bubbles into the bleeder gun.
I just keep it attached and go down once in awhile and pump up so more.

Appleman, I am degssing the Cherry with it now, Ill tell you how long
it takes when its done. All I know is that I could not get it sall out
with the drill on the Black Currant without the bleeder. I started the
cherry yesterday and its running out of gas already but has a little
lefyt in it.

Appleman, Shes almost completly out of gas now. It kind of takes a
little time, a few pumps here a few pumps there but all in all it is
much easier as like I said I spent a long time on the Black Currant and
it never did get degassed with the Drill mounted attachment very well.
My wine will definetly benefit from this as Im not stirring in all that
02 either!

OK Wade......I see a "How To" pictoral posting opportunity here on your degasser.....Wadeeeeeeee.....I'm waiting!!!!

I don't see any pictures yet with detailed instructions !!!

WADEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

Okay this kit is a tuffy to ferment. Im at 1.020 now and since my
Raspberry is finally fished fermenting from a LONG time ago due to not
having the right temp, I have both brew belts focused on getting this
puppy to its destination. I had this one under heat the whole time but
I guess this one really likes the higher end of the heat! I'm not sure
really what happened with these 2 kits but Im going to have to put this
batch in a 5 gallon carboy and hopefully not top that up. I sucked up
almost every drop including sediment out of the primary and it was
filled to 6 gakkons and its very weak in taste! Not happy with this and
next time I'll buy a Chardonnay or Reisling. I'm suprised as each 3
gallon kit was a 7.5 litre kit and I thought Id be pretty good with a
15 litre 6 gallon batch.

Wade, don't worry about the wine being thin when you make it into sparkling wine....the bubbles will baffle your taste buds and you will love it.

I have read that in France they use the less desirable blends to make some of the sparkling wines.

As soon as you get this one bottled mix up a batch of something else and sparkle it too.

All my sparkling wine thus far has been from apple wine....I keep wanting to try some other fruit wines and sparkle them.I think apple/raspberry would be awesome sparkled.....

So many wines....so few carboys...

Now I'm really glad I decided to go with the Riesling!

Wade, does your kit have you clarify it before you sparkle it? NW told me she never clears hers.

I forget, it does come with clarifier but dont remember if it tells you
to use it if your making sparkling wine with it as it comes with
directions for both sparkling and still. The instructions are a little
confusing as they jump all over the place with thiskit.

Okay, something was wrong here and it didnt occur to me till this
morning. I was rereading the instructions and it said to put into
secondary which I did @ 1.010 and the SG when I checked it yesterday
was 1.020??????????? So I stirred it real good and checked again, it is
@ 1.006 where it is supposed to be before clarifying if it is stable.
So I will check it tommorrow and Tuesday and see if its ready tp clear.

Joan it does say to clear but not filter probably because you dont want to get rid of to much of the yeasties!

Edited by: wade

I just racked mine off the dead yeast and it's quite clear so I won't clarify. I'm waiting for you to bottle so hurry up, will ya?? =)

That reminded me of...

A mama tomato and her son were on a walk and her little tomato wasn't keeping up. She told him to catsup! =)

I still have to chack and see if its done fermenting then clear it. Get
yours in the bottle first Woman! So I'll know what not to do!

Just so everybody knows we pm'ed each other on this sparkling wine and
were both making jokes on whos going to screw it up first so that the
other one knows what to or (not) to do!
