I do something that goes against my character. Yesterday I was at Costco and bought a Kirkland brand Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina). I thought for $6.99 how could I go wrong?
Supposedly an 87 rated wine so I didn't expect a lot... but YUCK! I mean, what did these guys do to those poor grapes? After 4 hours of breathing it was slightly better, but still pretty awful. The oak tasted like some more of extract and it seemed to be so profound that they intended to cover up the wine completely.

So I went to the basement and found a Malbec (must sourced from Chile). It's a Mosti Mondiale brand Renaissance Impressions kit that has their grape pack with about 18 months of age on it. You could barely tell the 2 wines were distant cousins. Full fruit flavors, good body, hints of toasted oak... and all that out of a freshly opened bottle.

So what's the point of this post? I think everyone should go out and get some bargain wine from time to time as a reminder of how lucky we are to have excellent wine making kits available to us. It's easy to take these things for granted.
