    Why add oak to wine?

Thanks for all the insight. Guess I will need to obtain some oak next time I order from Morewine.

Blackberry Welch's Farmers Pick Juice Recipe

Thanks for the input. I will add the nutrient in stages. This yeast has a 13 - 15% alcohol range so if it ferments semisweet and dies, so be it. I didn't add K-meta up front because I am assuming the bottled juice is pasteurized / all equipment is sanitized and wanted the pectic enzyme to work...

Blackberry Welch's Farmers Pick Juice Recipe

Today I started a 6 gallon batch of Welch's Blackberry Juice wine because I found it as a clearance product at Aldi Foods. The bottle label is called "Farmer's Pick Blackberry". The label boasts nothing artificial, no preservatives, unfiltered 100% juice & no sugar added. Contents are: 1...

    Bulk aging question

Since they don't build basements in my area, I use the MBR closet for bulk aging. After discovering a loose stopper air lock on an "bulk aging" carboy I opted for used 5 gal SSteel corny kegs. This means finding an argon tank & regulator but once the keg is properly sealed / pressurized the...

Need tip on exhausting odor from primary?

This is one of those "I want to know for next time" questions. Has anyone figured out how to minimize / capture / vent a strong smell coming off of primary bucket fermentation? I only had towels over the buckets to let in air so the odor was permeating. I was fermenting 24 lbs of diced...

    Why add oak to wine?

The Morewine catalog came in today's mail. I noted pages of oak products for adding to wine including oak tannin, chips, sticks, etc. Why add oak to wine? If the wine tastes good, why make it taste like a tree?

Are LHBS fruit strainer bags special food grade?

Funny. Hasn't killed you yet? That's encouraging. Hi, would you like a bottle of my homemade wine? It hasn't killed anyone yet... Perhaps worse than death, the BPA leached out of plastics is suppose to cause ED and Low T.

Are LHBS fruit strainer bags special food grade?

I agree that food grade plastics are somehow "safer" for us. I have googled this topic now that I asked it on this forum & really cannot find unbiased or good research. There are many conflicting articles from people who write like they know what they are talking about. What I have...

    Sanitizing EVERYthing

Yes I pretty much sanitize everything as I go but keep it simple. I bought a $6 cheap tall plastic kitchen size trash can that I only use for cleaning / sanitizing. Everything from tall stir spoons, auto syphons, wine thief etc fit inside. I use unscented oxyclean to clean. Toss a spoonful...

Are LHBS fruit strainer bags special food grade?

I needed nylon bags for a 8 gallon batch of peach banana wine. Stopped in Lowes & for $7 bought a 2 pack of bluehawk brand nylon paint strainer bags that fit perfectly in 5 gallon primary buckets with enough extra length to go over the top lip or tie in a knot. Today I pitched the yeast...
