I've been looking through the pruning section in a book I have and it says to leave a renewal vine? Aren't all vines renewing themselves the next year? I'm not sure I understand the aim of leaving a short extra vine...is it a safety?

You leave a renewal shoot, not vine. The vine is the whole plant and the shoot is the small branches that form each year- called a shoot that year, which become canes the next year. You leave a renewal shoot to replace canes that die, including the trunk occasioanlly.
