Despite stirring vigoriously for several minutes my starting sg was 1.074 which is about average for me. Any suggestions?

Welcome to WMT! Assuming you accounted for temperature in your Sg measurement, which isn't a great big factor, but can be a 0.005 or so and that you added the corrector amount of water and not to much. Your choice is to add sugar to raise the starting SG. Don't know of any other choice.
ok thanks

Can you tell us what you are going to ferment? I.e., is this a kit, or juice, or a recipe?
It's a kit. Vieux Chateau Du Roi by Cru International. Regardless of type or brand I seldom reach 1.080 sg. I am satisfied with 10-11 % alcohol but am curious.

Another factor to consider is your hardware.
example are you doing a six gallon kit in a 6.5 gallon carboy (new carboy)
or, I have three hydrometers and they differ by .002 (live with it)
or, if a kit did the manufacturer make an error (switch what you run)

Sizing is ok, temp was 68 though and I never considered my hydrometer may be incorrect. Thanks for this.
