Just watched a video by a washing machine repairman. He explained that when he first began, most of his repairs were for replacing worn out bearings, which used to last from 7 to 10 years.
The EU passed a law so that all manufacturers have to make washing machines with built-in obsolescence! Now, if the bearings go, it is impossible to change them. New bearings come complete with Drum and housing. The cost, plus labour, makes it cheaper to buy a new machine!
I don't doubt that the same thing, on all sorts of things, applies In the UK and the USA.
