Riding out this rainy Labor Day weekend 'downashore' again. And with grapes around the corner and the wine flowing so were the stories.
My dad was telling me about his grandfather's techniques and systems he used for his wine. And one year, long before juice buckets were a thing, apparently it was a very very bad season for California grapes. He was not able to find anyone who had grapes in stock living on he east coast. Eventually he found someone who was offering "pre-crushed" must.
But he wasn't picking up 5 or 6 gal pails out of some walk-in freezer. It was actually an old oil tanker truck driving around making deliveries. The driver literally would come to your home and the truck would set up all the hoses to the must pump. And they would pump the crushed grape must directly from the truck into your barrels.
Just thought that was pretty interesting. Salutè
