Trying to get started and was wondering where I can find grapes to buy.. I live in Long Island New York. i read some where that grapes need to be pre purchaced in advance in June. Is that true and any suggestions on where i can buy locally from

Q: Are you looking to buy grapes that were grown in LI (i.e., on the East End), or are you looking to buy grapes from, say, California that have been shipped in.

I could be wrong, but I sorta doubt you will find LI grapes available to buy. You can definitely buy Cali grapes in certain parts of Long Island. (For example, the far western side of Long Island, viz., Brooklyn. ;) )

I was thinking local vineyards from long island,, just because I thought that would be the easiest. I just want to get into the hobby and inherited a lot of the equipment for fresh grapes. I live in long beach, any recommendation where to buy them from? and do I need to start my order now?

Despite my piping up, I cannot be very helpful with this. I can say that I think it would actually be far easier to buy Cali grapes than LI grapes. There are companies that are in the business of shipping grapes to the east coast. There are a number of winemakers here from North Jersey/NYC area, and some have reported using these guys in Brooklyn: http://www.tpswinegrapes.com/default.aspx?pageid=1 , and I think they may even be related to these guys in Hicksville: http://www.winemakersnewyork.com/wine-grapes-juice/ but I don't know.

I hope someone reading this thread knows anything about getting North Fork grapes. Maybe there is a LI vintners' association you can find. I guess you could ask these guys: http://www.liwines.com/

there are a number of wineries in the North Fork of eastern Long Island. I would take a day trip and visit and ask your question on purchasing grapes there.
