Fruit flies in Winter?

If you have any doubt about how hardy fruit flies are... This basement room is now at about 57 degrees and has been for at least a month. I check my airlocks about every 3-4 weeks in cool weather. 10 carboys so ten airlocks and here's what was in the airlocks.
So Yes you do need airlocks / covers on containers year round. (PS - It wasn't Alcohol in the airlocks so they didn't die happy. )

nope, @Scooter68 lives on the opposite corner of Arkansas as me, and yesterday i was killing gnats flying around in my wine room. and changing out airlocks, since i am not fermenting any wines right now just bulk aging it is cold in my wine room,

When I have fruit fly problems I use an automated insecticide dispenser. It spays a bit of insecticide into the air every 15 minutes and is rated for use in food prep areas. I also cure sausages and some cheeses in my cellar

One of the benefits of living in Minnesota is that insects, including fruit flies, disappear in the winter.

They have not let up here in North Carolina yet. 38 degrees F. yesterday and still picking on my stuff in the old cold building out back. (Momma says I can't bring that stinky stuff inside.) It'll be good come spring though.
