Ive seen people here talking about both carboys and demijohns and it got me thinking? What is the difference? arnt they both glass containers used to ferment or age wine in? Why would you use one over the other?

Never thought about it.... I just started out using carboys. Good question

The Demis come in larger sizes and are very thin glass walls (I had one break w/6 gal wine on floor) and also can have a outside covering (plastic wicker). For that reason most use glass carboys which have thicker glass walls. Both can work.

Denijohn's are thinner I believe and a carboy is usually the cont. used to move, transport or bulk age. The DJ is usually the larger one probably to aide in the degassing process.

I use only carboys. Me too never thought about it.
