    RJ Spagnols Grand Cru Valpolicella

I got to rack the wine out of the bucket this weekend so I opened up one of those teabags to see what's in there. You were right, big chunks of oak chips while the cheesecloth bag has oak sawdust. Currently, the wine has a very strong oak flavor. I mean it's thick. The kit came with a big...

    Hello from Alberta

Surprisingly enough, I found more winemaking shops in Airdrie than in Brampton, Ontario. A city almost 20 times the size of Airdrie. Heck, even "4th and Vine" (a bottle label company I used a lot) is headquartered in Airdrie. So I'm in wine making heaven. :) Found a few good shops in...

    Whole house vs minijet

Is there anything special to be looking for in regards to whole house filters? I was looking at a Watts unit with two bonus 5 micron filters at Home Depot. Other than finding the right fittings, is this all I need to get?

    Hello from Alberta

The movers said that they're very cautious when it comes to wine because they never know what they're dealing with. Could be worthless vinegar or rare pricey bottles. Their insurance company imposes that they build special crates with lots of foam and stored in a special area of the truck. I...

    Hello from Alberta

Thanks everyone. The inventory is slowing rebuilding itself, but it's the aging that'll take a while. I got great hopes for the summer so I become popular with the new neighbors. ;)

    Hello from Alberta

I've been a member here for a while with few posts (mostly reading) and realized that I never introduced myself. I'm Marc from Calgary. :) I used to be in Ontario last summer when we relocated. I started making wine in early 2009 and when we moved in the summer of 2010, I just started to...

    Whole house vs minijet

Now I'm starting to regret not ordering a WH filter from Wade along with my new pump.

    RJ Spagnols Grand Cru Valpolicella

In any case, someone suggested that next time I could tie that cheesecloth sock to a heavy cup or beer mug (sanitized, of course) and that'll keep it sunk into the wine. Or fill it with sanitized marbles. That wine is violently fermenting! Woke up this morning with foam overflowing (I don't...

    Avery Lables

I use Avery 8254. They're removable labels that make them really easy to remove from the bottle after. Some other labels are a real pain to peel off.

The oak dust came in two other bags that got mixed up in the cheese cloth bag with the grape skins. I have 3 large things floating in the fermenter: 1 big cheese cloth bag with oak and grape skins. 2 oversized tea bags that the instructions call infusion bags.

    RJ Spagnols Grand Cru Valpolicella

I'm not sure. They look like two oversized tea bags. That's what the instructions call them.

    Disaster struck, I'm crestfallen.

Check the "Classifieds" forum. There are several threads in there.

    Disaster struck, I'm crestfallen.

A moment of silence for your loss... :( That has always been my biggest fear everytime I moved a carboy. Even though I bought steel handles for my carboys and always have a large sheet of plywood on the concrete floor, the thought has always been in the back of my mind. I bought a pump...

    RJ Spagnols Grand Cru Valpolicella

Hi all, I bought the kit this weekend and it comes with a generous amount of oak chips and grape skins along with a cheese cloth tube sock (for lack of a better explanation). It also came with two infusion bags (I think that's what they're called). Fermentation started this weekend with oak...

    First vacuum pump use

Since there is a thread about vacuum pump use and I just ordered one from Wade... I got a question!! :h What reading should I be aiming for when degassing? By that, I guess I mean what's the dangerous limit to stay away from? I'm not sure what my glass carboys can take. EDIT: As soon as I...

    Decorative wine...

Thanks for your input. But I'm not too sure about funky psychedelic wine... ;) Will tea be a good product? It has a nice dark color that fits well as fake wine. It looks good in a bottle.

    Decorative wine...

This is an odd question that I'm not sure where to post. If you think it's in the wrong area, feel free to move it. I'd like to put a couple of "fake" wine bottles around the house as a decorative piece. However, I'm not really willing to sacrifice my real wine for that purpose. Any bit of...

How big is your wine collection (round 2)

I had about 130 bottles. I was only 1.5 years into this hobby and I was starting to get some really good results from the first batch after some good aging. Then I moved across the country. The moving company was going to charge me way too much to handle the bottles. Gave it all away to...

    Will a hair dryer work??

We have a food steamer in the kitchen and that's what I use. The steam hole is large enough so I tip the bottle and hold the cap against one edge of the hole. Shrinks that PVC cap in seconds and without wrinkles.
