RJ Spagnols Grand Cru International California Syrah

With dried grape skin pack... I'm trying to do different kits to see how they turn out. This is my first Spagnols kit. I've done a couple of kits with juice grapeskin packs, so it'll be interesting to see how the dried grape pack compares. It's a < $100 kit, so I'm being realistic...

Cellar Craft Cellar Craft International Showcase Barbera

With grape skin pack... So my Step-daughter and her husband took me out for my birthday a couple months ago to this place...blatant plug warning... Cooper's Hawk Winery They belong to the wine club and just rave about the wine and the food, (I got them making their own wine this year, but...

WineXpert Spanish Tempranillo with Grape Skin Pack

Just started this kit on Sunday 12/11/11. It's an interesting change from the normal WE kits I've done the past couple of years. The grape skin pack raised the SG from 1.092 to 1.106 overnight, that's after adding the two packs of RC212 it came with. Lot's of oak with this kit. 2 packs (60g)...

    I busted my original hydrometer!

I feel...hollow, in a way... I just checked the SG on a batch of Fresh Strawberry, put it under some hot water to rinse it, and it just fell apart. This was my "Go To" hydrometer...I have a couple of spares, but, yanno...choke!!! It just won't be the same. I'm sure I'm babbling, but...

    Making wine for other people.

I have no problem, making wine for myself, then giving it away to other people. A friend of mine's Mother asked me to make some elderberry wine out of 8 lbs of elderberries she picked. I've never made elderberry wine before, nor have I tasted it, but I couldn't say no. My plan is to make a 1...

    Watkin's Peanut Butter Extract...

Has anyone tried to flavor a wine with this. I've been thinking of a PB&J wine...I don't know if it will taste good as a wine, but I know I like the taste of PB & J. I have a 6 gallon carboy with Welch's Concord Grape Jam (I picked up on sale). I'm thinking of separating a gallon and...

    Suggestions for pairing...

...with Spam. It's white elephant gift exchange time for the gonzo clan. My idea this year is to get a 12 pack of Spam, a couple of Spam cookbooks, and now I just need an idea for a wine pairing. I'm not worried about any particular recipe. Say you just took the can, opened it and took a...

    WineXpert Selection Originale White Merlot

I just picked this kit up today...I tasted a sample a couple of months ago at the shop, pretty tasty. It ended up winning a silver at the Indianapolis show this summer. I'll keep everyone updated on the status. Peace, Bob

    Busted my first Mityvac...

...the handle just snapped right at the pivot point. :( Found an all metal hand vac pump at Harbor Freight for $20, so far it's working great. I'm still using the fittings from the Mityvac, the Harbor Freight fittings were too small for my bung. Wait a minute...did that sound right.:h...

    Artificial sweetner...fermenting?

I have 6 gallons of Welch's frozen concentrate wine I wanted to experiment with. I had a bottle of DaVinci's (sugar free) Gourmet Raspberry Syrup, so I pitched it in. I had already stabilized the wine with k-meta and sorbate. The syrup is made with Splenda (Sucralose), and the airlock started...

Ferment on premise...legal in the US?

I know our Canadian brethren talk about the FOP's around them...but you never hear about any in the states. I assume if it was legal, someone would be doing it. Recently a co-workers wife started a "class" at a local farm stand. She's basically renting the equipment and making a kit wine (I...

    What think Y'all?

Cut vinyl for labels? I have access to a vinyl cutter at work, and thought this might make a neat idea. By the way, my last name begins with an S, hence the S on the bottle. :D Peace, Bob

    Stoooopid newbie mistake...

I started my first non-kit 6 gallon batch using blackberry jam purchased at Wal-mart. The recipe I was following called for 3 16oz jars per gallon, along with 1lb of sugar per gallon. First minor glitch...the jars at my Wal-mart are 18oz instead of 16oz...no big deal, some quick math...

    WineXpert Island Mist Peach-Apricot-Chardonnay

I just started it. The budget was a bit tight this month, so I figured I would try an Island Mist kit. One of the great things about my local supply shop is that the owner has made every kit he sells, and he usually has a sample laying around. It seemed like a good wine to have for those...

    Banana wine clearing nicely!

I'm just testing some recipes...no fining agents used, after I degassed it was like this in about 2 weeks. Here's a pic with the camera closer...looking through the jug. I'm liking this experimentation stuff...I'm learning a lot. I appreciate all the great info on this site...it's...

    WineXpert Selection International Austrailian Chardonnay.

I just bottled it...turned out awesome. I would compare it favorably with the Lindeman's I had over the weekend. It's very drinkable right now as is, so I'm sure it will just get better with age...only time will tell. Peace, Bob

My bottle brush just started shedding...

With two Labradors, I thought it was only dog hair that I had to worry about...thank goodness I rinse all my bottles out shortly after finishing them. What ever happened to "quality". I think I'll pick up one of them thAR "jet" rinsers...I'll show them brush people what for. Just a lame...
