    LONG time on yeast

on Jan 9 2009 I started 3 gallons of apple cider with an SG of 1.54 on some Safe-ale 04 yeast. It finished on 2/18/09 with an FG of 1.002, which is where I figured it would stop. Pretty common for that yeast. 2.19.09 I got sick. nigh on to death as the saying goes. 10.25.25 Long story...

Cant maintain siphon with racking cane

I got a racking cane today and 6 feet of 3/8th tubing. it wont maintain a siphon. I believe its because I got 3/8th tubing and not 5/16th (i didn't read right). I can siphon just fine with just the hose but with the cane it wont maintain the siphon. There is no air leak between the connections...

    Terminology question

In relation to yeast, what does attenuation mean? How can I use this information to make better wines and ciders? I used some K1V-1116 with a OG of 1.056 and current SG of 1.002. Using the formula to calculate attenuation. [(OG-FG)/(OG-1)] x 100 I plugged in the actual numbers...

    Topping off

Apple wine getting ready to rack for first time. Any reason I can not just flood the carboy with CO2 after its racked and not worry about topping off? I have an unlimited supply of CO2 and O2 so it seemed like a good idea to me. I can even start with the carboy full of CO2 as I rack into...

Beginners questions, Boy do I have them

Sorry but there are a few. 1: Is a starting SG of 1.127 For sugar and water, about 3 liters worth, too high to an SG to start a good fermentation using Lalvin's EC-1118? Yeast was rehydrated per guidelines and there was less than 10 Deg C difference in temp between must and yeast. 2...

1 Gal 17% alcohol from sugar/water now what?

Hi, For an experiment I took 1 gallon of water added sugar to get a SG of 1.131. I used Lavin EC-1118 yeast and after 9 days its reading 1.000 with no activity that I can see. All sterile procedures were followed. Now I have a gallon of water that is 17.7% alcohol if I did the math correctly...
