You’re a year or two ahead of me. They look great!

    Cab Franc vines dead

Can’t hurt to develop the rootstock roots this season and graft later.

    Newbie trellis help

I’d just train them to 6’ bamboo stakes first year. Trying to keep the trunk a bit straighter. Leave a sucker or two at the base but pinch back the tip. Then you have a second trunk to develop, if needed. This is from Double A vineyards. it should take you to their suggestions for growing...

    Inter-nodal shoots. Remove?

I remove all laterals. I want the energy going into ripening grapes, not more vegetative growth. You are correct to want more circulation and sun to your ripening clusters. Some may disagree but I’ve been a lateral puller since day one. It works for me.

    Inter-nodal shoots. Remove?

Yes they should be removed. They’re referred to a laterals or lateral shoots. Just snap them off.

    Shiraz vines

Wow! Good news about being so near MollyDooker! Sad to learn of their divorce. I had dinner with Sparky many years ago when he visited the US. Great, passionate guy. This was back in the days of Marquis-Philips winery. They’ve persevered through many challenges and struggles. Good to see them...

    Cab Franc vines dead

I should’ve bought Verona to trial too. I’m asking some of the listed nurseries. I’m also anxious to trial Plocher’s two new numbered varieties. Those will have to wait until next season I suppose as I saw none yet offered. Presently looking for the right piece of land in S KY or TN to expand...

    Shiraz vines

I don’t know a lot about Shiraz or it’s preferences, but Sparky Marquis knows more than most. He and his wife own MollyDooker So if you search YouTube you’ll find your answers. By the way he does a great video on the Marquis Watering method to pack the flavor into the grapes towards the end of...

Thanks, quite useful intro to some new weapons in our never-ending struggle with grapevine disease.

    New to Vines

The mounding is only to protect the graft union over winter In the first and second year. Leave no more than 2” of rootstock above ground from spring through fall. Then mound again to overwinter. If the scion is in the ground it, will develop its own roots which is exactly what you want to...

Starting to grow and grafted grapes

I’d leave a sucker or two near the base but pinch off the tips. First year you want the scion to grow to your first or second wire, depending upon growth habit. The main goal for first year vines is to develop the roots, then the trunk. Second year, develop your second trunk up to the wire...

    New to Vines

It all depends where you are, and climatic conditions, soil type, zone, etc. If it were me, I wouldn’t want to keep getting the leaves wet every morning and evening. Mildew and rot love moisture. Drip would be better. Also, the sprinklers will wash off, or dilute your disease control sprays...

    Cab Franc vines dead

Good info. I may try Cab Franc next year as well as Landot Noir. I’m on the edge of 6B/6A. Thinking of growing in air pots first year, then transplanting in-ground for 3rd leaf. Can move the pots to overwinter in the garage to allow the trunks to thicken. Perhaps planting for J method and cover...

    Growing Marquette organically ?

Thanks I’m checking it out now. 1 lb for $60 is a pricey solution but if it works..... guess I’ll bite the bullet if the Surround doesn’t give good results.

2020- The year I figure this propagation thing out.

Hope your luck is better this time around. I’m curious about your ‘suspected Chambourcin x Malbec hybrid’ where did you get it? Is it a chance seedling or did you pollinate it? If it grows out for you this year, or next I’d like to ask for a cutting or two. At my age I’m too old to wait years...

    Growing Marquette organically ?

It’s also very hot here in summer so the kaolin reduces the heat buildup a couple degrees. Surround claims that it will delay ripening by about one week. I’m good with that, but I’m in KY so your point is well taken. It seems the JB’s are too numerous to manually remove. I can get a bunch of...

    Need advice

Nothing wrong with letting it grow, especially from cuttings. If later you have other buds opening you can decide which shoots to retain.

What is the most important aspect of a grape trellis?

Try to keep it level so sprayer coverage is more effective.
