    Icewine Kit

I noticed that these were smaller kits. I had intended to buy a 3gal carboy or better bottle. I figured when I was done with the ice wine I would use the 3gal carboy for some of the meads I have been doing. Craig

    Icewine Kit

Does anybody have experience with one of the Icewine kits available from Winexpert or RJ Spagnols? Both my wife and I enjoy the icewines we have tried in the Lake Erie and Niagara regions. It is one of the few wines or beers that we agree on. However commercial icewines are very expensive so we...

Beginners questions, Boy do I have them

I'm a beginner wine maker also but I do have a few beers under my belt. However I really think you need to learn some patience. 1. EC-1118 is I believe good for 18% so should have no problem with a high gravity must. 2. 16 bubbles a second is a pretty good rate for a 1 gal wine. 3-7. Start...

    WineXpert Wine Expert kits

Thanks for your reply. I thought I was supposed to add one tablet per gallon a day to two before bottling to prevent oxidation with long term storage. From some online sources it appears that it takes 10 tablets to make 1 teaspoon. So adding 1 per gallon would be equivalent to adding 1/10 tsp...

Want to make a quick, small batch of hootch. :p

I believe all of his recipes make 1 US gallon unless otherwise specified. Craig

    WineXpert Wine Expert kits

Steve, Thanks, I plan on not touching this until at least Christmas and trying to save most of it until next year. It looked pretty good last night when I racked it I just wanted to make sure I didn't screw it up. I'll give it a couple weeks then add the stabilizer and clarifier and then leave...

    WineXpert Wine Expert kits

One thing I've learned from brewing beer is not to try to rush fermentation. So I didn't try to rush my wine kit. After 9 days in the primary instead of the 7 days the instructions call for I transfered to a 6gal carboy. However my SG was already 0.996. The instructions seem to suggest that the...

Im starting this one off with a how to.

Minor nitpick but 5 gals will not make 48x750ml. 5gal is just under 19liters which is 19000ml. 48x750ml is 36000ml. So your 5 gallons of wine is going to make about 25 - 750ml bottles of wine. 5gals will however fill about 48 12oz beer bottles. Craig

After your done making your wine.....

I'm working on my first batch of wine so I don't have experience but I intend to drink it. I figure I will sample a bottle every month from 6months to 1year then drink it as I need after that, saving a couple bottles to age for longer. I figure it should last 3 to 6 months at the rate I use...

    First Mead Batch

I'm a newbie and havn't made a mead yet but according to some online calculators I found (gotmead.com) 24# honey in 5gal is going to result in an OG around 1.175 with a potential ABV of 24%. Since yeast can't tolerate that level of alcohol I'm not surprised at you finish gravity. Using some...

    Misc. questions

One future solution to your saliva problem is to get an auto siphon. These are wonderful devices that make siphoning much easier. All types of brewing take patience, wine more so than beer but for best results beer also takes considerable patience. I have been brewing beer for a short while and...

    Adding Campden tablets

Well I didn't add it that way initially. Instead I mixed it with the juice and berries before fermentation. And I have already racked the wine. But it sounds like I should add some more sulfite at this time, so I am going to remove a little wine from the fermenter, mix one campden tablet with...

    WineXpert Wine Expert kits

You have to love Google. I decided to do a little more research on my own and found a great description off all of the additions. http://www.homebrewadventures.com/articles/article01130104.shtml In case anyone else reads this thread. Craig

    WineXpert Wine Expert kits

I just received a Wine Expert Reserve Mezza Luna Red kit. This is described as a very full bodied dry red wine. The kit included some ingredients I was surprised about. 1. First was Ksorbate. I thought sorbate was only used to stabilize wines that would be back sweetened. This wine should...

    Adding Campden tablets

I am making a 1 gal mixed berry wine based on a recipe from Jack Keller's website. I added 1 campden tablet when I mixed it up. After fermenting for about 10 days I transfered to a glass jug to secondary. Alot of lees settled out in the secondary so after 3 weeks I transfered to a new glass jug...
