Other "Musty Basement" taste and smell...

So, what am I doing wrong? My lovely bride who has been very supportive of this winemaking hobby, is also giving me some constructive feedback that a lot of my kits have this "musty basement taste and smell" sometimes maybe a little corky? She also suggested I throw it out here on the forum to...

WineXpert Selection Series French Merlot - Have you ever make one of these kits?

I was at the LHBS yesterday and saw this discontinued kit with a nice sale price, so I picked it up. It's the finest kit I've ever purchased...16 Liters of concentrate, but no grape skin pack. I haven't found any reviews on it or anyone commenting here on this particular kit. Just curious if...

What is causing the change in Specific Gravity?

Before I pitched the yeast, I stirred the must thoroughly and took a reading which showed a starting specific gravity of 1.098. While waiting for the must to drop a few degrees before I pitched the yeast, I remeasured a little while later and the S.G. climbed back up to 1.100. Thinking that I...

Other Master Vintner - Shiraz Kit

Pitched the yeast, stirring daily as per instructions and checking the S.G. and temp roughly every 12 hours. Here are charts showing the specific gravity and wine temperature (time scale is in hours). I'm very new at this, just wondering what your thoughts are regarding the charts. To my...

    Greetings from Denver, CO area

Just started making my own wine and mead because I'm cheap. I've made mead from honey that my bees have produced that tasted like parts cleaner, the next round was a bit better, trying a third time hoping for better results. I made some wine from our chokecherries too, wasn't all that great...
