    Bottle exploded, why?

It was a normal old cork and it was in a box, so I am not quite sure the extent of the explosion. There was a fairly linear horizontal line a bit more than half way down the bottle and the bottom half was in the box. The cork and top half of the bottle was intact.

    Bottle exploded, why?

That was my guess as well. Especially since it happened so quickly after corking. Even if refermentation occurred for some reason, I would think it would take more than an hour to generate the pressure to break a bottle. I am a novice though and want to make sure I cover all my bases before I...

    Bottle exploded, why?

Ironically, this is the only kit that I didn't write it down for. There is just a note stating I was sick at the time of re-racking into the secondary. It did go for 25 days in the primary fermenter. If I recall, it was steady for a bit prior to going into the secondary. I think I was on...

    Bottle exploded, why?

I made a batch of petit sirah from a kit. It went into a carboy for 3 months after fermentation, was re-racked into another carboy for 3 more months. I then re-racked it a 3rd time, added K-met and let it sit for 4 days before re-racking into a big mouth bubbler with a spigot at the bottom for...

Yeah, mine is cloudy immediately and just gets worse. Maybe the distilled water is worth it for me.

Do you have to use Chitosan or Kieselsol

4 years aging because you didn't use fining agents? I am fairly new to this and haven't been using the fining agents provided by the last 5 kits I have done. All are still aging. However, I was only planning on a year or so of bulk aging prior to aging in the bottle. Am I going to find that 4...

    Star San

I read somewhere on their site about it only being good for a few days. Not going to search for it now though. I do see where it says the pH below 3 should work and I think that would trump all anyway. I don't have the ability to test that at home currently though. One-step is only good for...

WineXpert Eclipse Stag Leap Merlot Extended Maceration

While not the same kit, I just did the Eclipse Zin/Cab bourbon barrel kit twice. Once per instructions and once with tannins, blackberry, cherries, currants and EM. They are sitting side by side in carboys. Can't wait to find out if the extra work was worth it.

Do you have to use Chitosan or Kieselsol

I have been keeping the bentonite, chitosan and kiesolol out from my kits. No problems yet. If I end up with wine that is cloudy, I have a box of clearing agents I can use...from what I gather, using the clearing agents runs the risk of pulling some of the flavors out of the wine, leaving you...

Keep in mind that the solution is only good for a few days. Supposedly it gets cloudier as time goes on and once cloudy, is no longer good. I use it as well. I just use a bottle drain tree and let them hang for a few hours before filling them.

    Corks

Phew...I did. Will be more careful next time though...

I haven't done anything to any of my corks...am I in trouble?

    Fermentation question

    Great, thanks again!

    Fermentation question

Thanks. I think I just figured it out and the amount I added was fairly minimal. Only took me to 1.084 starting SG.

    Fermentation question

Haha, you sound like me when someone asks a question they should google. I will get on it, thanks again

    Fermentation question

Thank you for the tip. Now, I did not account for the sugar that came along with the elderberry, currants and cherries...is there a way to do so that is remotely accurate?

    Fermentation question

I certainly prefer dry to off dry and would like to restart it. I was hoping for something easy, like tossing another yeast pack in there lol. The temperature has not changed appreciably. The wine is in my pantry and should have remained between 70 and 72. I also have a Lodi cab going next...

    Fermentation question

I have a WE Eclipse Nebbiolo kit going. I added currants, elderberry and some cherries with the plan to do an extended maceration. I switched the yeast to BM4x4, that I rehydrated with Fermaid O and fed with Fermaid K per the instructions. My initial SG was 1.082 and after a couple of weeks I...

    BIG RED

Probably more along the lines of a $20 bottle class, again...if lucky. Still a great deal though. 30 bottles that would sell for about $20 is $600 worth of wine for the cost of a kit. If you go to labelpeelers.com you can get high end Wine Expert Eclipse kit mentioned above for around $125...
