    Low initial specific gravity

Well that will certainly be a fierce wine! I think I'll leave it as it, wouldn't want to dilute the flavour, but I'll probably save it for the weekends when I don't have to get up too early...

    Low initial specific gravity

It was right around that. So it should have a good kick anyway. Thanks for all your help with this!

    Low initial specific gravity

Thanks! Will the extra sugar I added have a large impact on the wine? Its a 23 litre kit and I added maybe four cups.

    Low initial specific gravity

It was in the white area between the 90 and the 1.10

    Low initial specific gravity

The kit was supposed to be at 1.08 to 1.095, but it was closer to 0.95. It's possible I added an extra litre of water at most. Would that make that much of a difference? I think I was reading the hydrometer correctly, but if I wasn't, there's going to be a whole lot of sugar for the yeast! I...

    Low initial specific gravity

So I'm on my second wine kit, identical to my first (which turned out really well), it's a Chardonnay. But with the second kit, the initial specific gravity was low (about 0.9 when it should have been over 1.05). I added sugar to get it up to where it should be, but my question is, why would...

    Topping up help

Would a sanitized wine bottle be fine for saving the extra?

    Topping up help

I get what you're saying, but I live in a province where the worst wine costs $10 a bottle, anything decent starts at $15. So to add $30 to the process seems a bit pointless to me. I think I'll just use the smaller carboy. I don't think much will end up getting watsted.

    Topping up help

Hi all, Tomorrow I'll be stabilizing and degassing my wine and the clearing will be the day after (following the kits instructions). The instructions also say to top up with a similar wine after the clearing. I don't want to have to buy a similar wine to top up my kit. That will double my costs...

    First Batch Temperature Question

Thanks for the response. I think I'll move it just to be safe as long as there's no risk to moving it.

    First Batch Temperature Question

I'm thinking I'll move it. Temps are forecasted to go even higher than before, plus the wife wasn't happy that I was taking up closet space, so it's a win win as long as the move won't negatively impact the wine.

    First Batch Temperature Question

Hi, I've just started my first batch of wine ever! It's a Chardonnay wine kit from Costco. I started my primary fermentation on Monday, June 25th. Everything is going well so far, getting bubbles in the airlock, but I have a dilemma.... I have to go away this weekend for four days and an...
