Wine in 1st transfer carboy untouched for 8 months

Thanks for the reply, sorry for the delay in replying - there is just so much that needs to be done. I really appreciate the help, as no more harm can come to the 2 carboys, they are still intact under lock, they are just going to have to wait their turn. I will post a update when the tasting...

Wine in 1st transfer carboy untouched for 8 months

Good Morning: We returned home after 7 months, prior to leaving the family that I thought would transfer the wine for me failed to do so. It has been in the 1st carboy from the fermenter for the past 8 months. It is Merlot - 2 - 5 gal. carboys. Will it still be good - any suggestions how to...

    Filtration

All is well this morning - re piped the system, installed a simple trap for initial purge, bled the system, quite happly with the results. Thanks again for the interest and replies, appreciated.

    Filtration

Thank you for the reply - I do not have a pressure relief in the system, I thought of tapping in a check valve in the top of the filter casing, as I am sure that is where the problem lies. You would have a full volume of air in the filter at startup but I assumed that all air would be displaced...

    Filtration

Finally got around to setting up the Vacuum system, all went well with the exception of the Big Blue 10 filter, getting the air out of that system is really tough. After testing all the connections and replaceing the BB filter, with a 10" single cartridge unit, I narrowed down the air inlet to...

    Requisite introduction

Thanks for the reply - I tried to contact PakLab, I think that they are out of business, none of the sites shown are active. I can give it a run, I guess after a couple of days in the primary, there should be some kind of indicatiion as to whether it will ferment or not, and if there are any...

    Requisite introduction

I am looking for a little help. I have just received a PakLab Kit from a retired wine maker, he thinks that he purchased it about 5 years or so ago. He does not remember ever opening the lid on the container, and by all appearances it is intact. The wine is Austranlian Cheraz -Sterile Opus V...

    Another dumb question

I thank you all for the help and advice, appreciated - The "advisor" that I have is a neighbor, claims he has made wine for years, nice individual, you get his help if you ask for it or not. I did purchase a vacuum pump, as with our type of business we have about every filter ever concieved by...

    Another dumb question

Here we go again - another dumb one - (actually 2) I have both batches of merlot sitting in their carboys ( 1st transfer from the fermenter) I am just over 2 weeks away from the first transfer to the second carboy. I am going to filter at this stage, but I have been told that I should have...

    Filtration

Just a update: After searching and looking at what is available, a reasonalbe food safe centrifugal pump is just not available, and I found I could not replace the heads on eith of the 2 pumps that we have in stock to make sure we had a food safe product, based on your input, I decided that the...

    Observations of first efforts

The first one is still in the first transfer from the primary - it has about another 3 weeks before I transfer it again, the second Merlot, I transferred it from the primary on Thursday, the SG prior to transfer was identical to the first one 0.998. The second one took 15 days in the primary...

    Filtration

Simple to Flush then run thru the sanatizing solution when finished with the wine, then re-flush with water. It is one of the reasons that I like 316, it is really impervious to most liquids and acids. Thanks loads.

    Filtration

Thank you for your time and reply, it is appreciated. By looking at Big Blue filters, it appears (I will confirm) that 3 psi Thank you for both your time and reply, it is appreciated. In looking at the 10" Big Blue in line filter with a 5 micron cartridge, it appears that a minimum of 3 psi...

    Filtration

Thank you- What model of pump are you using if you don't mind me asking - I am looking for a "food grade" small centrifugal, preferably with a 316 stainless impellar, so far no luck. This is fun, I am looking forward to building a transfer/filtration system, Ozonated water systems is my...

    Filtration

Thank you - appreciated. I read most of the conversations in the link you provided, my mistake, I should have done a search first before starting another thread - (slow learner). My question I think has been answered, that is the use of the standard water filter cartridge can be used without any...

    Filtration

Can anyone advise if the over the counter Replaceable Water Filters are suitable for the filtration of Wine. The availablitity of a suitable Micron range ( 1 - 5 ) is readily available in the small 10 inch under the coutrer filter casing and media. My major concern is the effect of a column...

    Observations of first efforts

Thanks for the reply - Thank you for posting - it is interesting to say the least, watching this second kit - it is in it's 5th day and still evidence of fermentation. (the primary fermenter is a large Spagnols Tub - with a loose fitting top). There is over 12" of head space. so hopefully no...

    Observations of first efforts

Thanks for your reply - my first thoughts were not that good - II figured that somehow I had erred big time. From my beer products past, the only way that I achieved success was to log each batch - compare - modify if needed - but constantly record. It was the only way that I could learn. I am...

    Observations of first efforts

You are away above my head at this point - add what - when - test what to develop a type of control - Still on the steep learning curve! Thanks for the reply.

    Observations of first efforts

I have the unique poition of being able to compare the efforts of each of the two kits of the Cellarmaster Merlot Wine Kits. I put the first one down - then sterilized the primary and started the second one. The only thing that I have changed between the two, I substituted the yeast from the...
