pH Reading and Swirling the Sample

I usually do my measurements with a stir bar spinning, so that would have the same effect as swirling the probe. I assume you calibrate it before each use, and that should give an idea about accuracy when still or moving.

Bulk Aging Larger Batches - 26 Gallons

You got that keg looking pretty! I only bothered with making the inside look pretty but that looks great. Now you need to be on the hunt for the other sizes like 5 gallons (easy to find) and 7.5gal which is much harder to find. The 50L Euro kegs hold like 13 gallons so that will round out...

Pretty standard top. It will fit a 2 inch gasket and clamp.

Bulk Aging Larger Batches - 26 Gallons

I've had the best success cleaning the kegs out with PBW. It's made for the task and when used with hot water really cleans the stainless to new condition. The Kumbucha kegs I got were super funky inside, and an overnight soak with PBW/Hot water cleaned them right up. I also use a racking set...

Enolmatic vs. All in One wine pump

It sounds like you will like having an enolmatic. Using it is easy but there are little tricks you learn to make it work better. I would not let an inexperienced person run it unsupervised.

Enolmatic vs. All in One wine pump

I have both. Enolmatic is easier to use and pretty good at bottling wine. The all in one works well but isn’t as convenient. If I could only have one, the AllinOne has more flexibility to do other tasks. Enolmatic: Pros: more convenient to use, easier to clean, faster Cons: more expensive...

Bulk Aging Larger Batches - 26 Gallons

Haha. The stale beer shower risk is real and ever present. When releasing the pressure by pushing down the central button, always put the keg on its side and point it away from you. And do it outside. The spears can be a bit of a challenge until you learn the tricks. The retaining ring can...

Bulk Aging Larger Batches - 26 Gallons

I forgot to mention, to seal the 1.5 inch diameter you need properly sized bungs. I think they are #8s. Catalyst Manufacturing sells them if you want the vented bungs. If you are sure all the co2 is gone, you can just seal with a stainless cap and gasket. Here’s an illustration. The bung...

Post a Meme, any Meme! (no politics)

You sure? It looks like the Manson girls before they carved the swastikas in their foreheads. Oh wait. I get it. Charlie. Haha.

Bulk Aging Larger Batches - 26 Gallons

So the screw style spear comes on European kegs. All others I have seen have a retaining ring and little notches to get it out. So after fully releasing the pressure, you unscrew. The spear will still be held in by a safety catch. You need to insert a small screwdriver in the top to release the...

    The Bread Thread

A bread story from last weekend. We had a big storm here with 60 mph wind that knocked out power for 24 hours or so. Fortunately, I made some sandwich size baguettes just before the power went down. That night we made shrimp Bohn Mi sandwiches and ate them by Coleman lantern light.

Bulk Aging Larger Batches - 26 Gallons

I'll second what @GSMChris says. Sanke beer kegs work great. You take out the central spear, and the top fits a 2inch tri-clamp. I have a large variety of sizes 15.5gallons, 5gallons and a couple of 50 liter ones. I have paid as much as $50 and as little as free. The last bunch I got were 5...

    The Bread Thread

I’ve been making 1-2 sourdough loaves per week for the last 2 months. I started with my wife’s 10 year old starter but “captured” my own about a month ago. Still working on things like ears, and decoration, but making really great bread. I really like the fridge retard method.

    Avante Yeast for Malbec

Of course Avante will work great. Malbec is actually another Bordeaux variety and the Avante will be ideal. I've done so many Avante fermentations since 2018 that I can't count. It's a great yeast, with quick, clean, and uneventful fermentations. I've used Bravo too, but I can't say it's...
