    Licensing and requirements

I have pretty much determined that a separate building would be the way to go. For now, I plan on planting Marquette grapes. We'll go from there. Maybe I can fund my endeavor selling grapes.

What are you making and what have you made ???

Concord is a tough wine to get right, but I like it a lot. it requires a lot of measurement to get the acid right. I have to dilute it a bit with water to reduce the acid. I started backsweetening with Old Orchard Concord 100% grape concentrate. I use 2 per 6 gallon carboy, and it gives it...

Starting a winery with kit wines?

If you have a moment, would you mind telling me the names of either one of those? I am curious to look into their offerings. I appreciate your response!

Starting a winery with kit wines?

Does anyone believe it is possible to start a winery using kit wines? I have made several kits, and they turn out quite good. I am wondering, because this can help take time off of the capital outlay and recovery of that capital by shortening the process. I would obviously transition to the...

YOOPER new guy, that's the U.P. of Michigan.

I am not quite in the UP, but Northern Michigan. I make wine with Concord grapes, and I think after a few batches I have it down to a pretty good recipe. Nice to see some fellow Michiganders on the site.

    Licensing and requirements

I was reading on that before, and it really didn't specify that it needed to be in a separate dwelling, but I imagine it probably does. For the sake of inspection and sanitizing...

    Did something stupid...

I was making a Cabernet Sauvignon kit, and I had a heater in a small room to control the temp for that. One of my boys came in and dialed up the heater, and the temperature in the room shot up to 85 degrees overnight. I went to check on it the next morning, and was horrified. It was...

    Licensing and requirements

I would agree. There are few out there, and the few that there are, are very sweet. I intend to do the concord just to continue doing it, but it is pretty tart. I am planning on going to a wine event this March in Kalamazoo. It should be pretty enlightening.

    Licensing and requirements

I work in Cadillac, and live just south of there. I have gone tasting in Traverse City, and there are some pretty good wines. I notice that the concord vines we have up here do extremely well, and it makes me think there is some potential there. I would obviously make other wines, but that is...

    Good afternoon from Northern Michigan!

That's definitely the plan. Doing the math, I would have to make a whole lot of wine to replace my income. It would be an awesome feeling!

That's awesome. You should label those bottles for their respective special occasions. lol

    Licensing and requirements

Does anyone have experience (hopefully in Michigan) with licensing to be a small winemaker? I have a pretty nice set up in my basement, but don't know if it is possible to license as a small winemaker if I am producing out of my home. I am looking to be able to sell my wine. Thank you!

what do you HATE the most about wine making?

Needing a floor corker instead of that hand corker. That, and peeling labels for bottles rather than buying new.

What are you making and what have you made ???

Running a small batch of concord right now. Make it every year, so this should be a good batch. Have made - Cabernet sauvignon kit x2, White Zin kit x2 (this was a big hit with the ladies), Cherry (did not turn out well). The concord turns out really good, but didn't at first.

    Good afternoon from Northern Michigan!

Hello, My name is Kris, and I am currently an Accountant for a defense contractor in Northern Michigan. I enjoy my work, but find wine making to be a fun and fulfilling activity. I hope to put my business degree to good use, and work toward becoming a full time vintner. I am 35...
