    Skeeter Auction

I think part of it is because they're raising money and the buyers are feeling charitable, but a big part of it is that these guys just like it. I don't think it would go for nearly that much outside of the auction, but $20 a bottle would easily sell what you have, at least with this crowd.

    Skeeter Auction

Just thought I'd share this tidbit... I was at a trapping convention over the past few days and attended an auction to raise a few dollars for the organization promoting the convention and their activities.. The auction consisted of items that vendors at the convention donated. There wasn't...

Dragon's blood sure does look pretty

The starting SG was 1.09. It is decent tasting now but isn't meant to be so dry, imo. I added a touch of sugar to a sample from the primary and it was good. I think it will taste very nice after backsweetening and sitting for a month or two. It will make a nice summer drink, but I need to...

Dragon's blood sure does look pretty

It is nice to just look at. My first batch. For some reason my sg got lower than other wines, ~ .984 - .986. And, it did not require hardly any degassing. Anyone know why this would be?

How many gallons of Lon D's Skeeter Pee have been made?

    I made my first 6 of skeeter in Feb, 3335 + 6 = 3341 I am now bottling my first batch of dragon's blood 3341 + 6 = 3347

    Just bottled a few....

Note: I opened a bottle yesterday (after just a few weeks) and the WE pineapple pear is already beginning to balance out. It's a very nice fruit wine with my tweaks. I don't know if it would be better or worse without the tweaks, but it's good and getting better. In a few months it should be...

    A very noob question...

Well, I did put my question under the context of "stupid", so I guess I am covered.. :) Thanks for all of the answers. I've just been messing around with making different cheap wines for the past year +. I've learned a bunch but I am also missing alot of the basics regarding what is and how...

    A very noob question...

So is much of what is considered balanced determined by taste? That seems rather subjective, but I presume that there must be some kind of fairly objective set of standards? Or are the standards set merely by becoming accustomed to what is considered to be balanced? Another dumb question...

    A very noob question...

I have been told that there is no such thing as a stupid question. I know that this isn't true because I have asked and heard a boatload. Not sure about this one but here goes anyway... What is a "balanced" wine?

    Just bottled a few....

I added sugar, but now that you mention it I should have cut back the water instead. Being a noob I didn't think of it at the time, but I will next time. Thanks for the suggestion. Still, it came out pretty good, and I expect it to get better, so chalk it up to experience earned cheaply. And...

    Just bottled a few....

I made mine from a Wine Expert kit. It wasn't the highest quality kit (at least I don't think it was), but good. I modified it a bit to up the alcohol, plus a couple other tweaks. To be honest I don't yet have an opinion on it as I want to let it sit for a few months. Out of the carboy I...

    Just bottled a few....

Thanks. I am pretty sure that software exists just for making labels, but probably any photo editing software could be used. Photoshop is good, but it's expensive. Paint shop pro is much cheaper and more than adequate for creating labels. There are probably even free programs out there that...

    Just bottled a few....

I would love to try to make Concord from grapes. I wonder if there are any vineyards near me where I could get some...

    Just bottled a few....

As far as the welch's is concerned... when I racked it for the final time I backsweetened it a bit, and I thought I made a mistake because I didn't like it. It was too sweet. I let it sit for a month and it changed pretty dramatically. Like I said, it won't win any contests, but it became a...

    Just bottled a few....

Thanks... The labels are really pretty easy. The software that I use is a 3 month free trial of Maestro Label Designer when I ordered labels from onlinelabels dot com. (Which was pretty reasonable at about $11 for 600 labels, 100 sheets...) I also have Photoshop which would pretty much do...

    Just bottled a few....

These have been sitting in carboys fora while and I had a bit of a window to bottle them over the past couple days. I made the pineapple pear from a WE kit with a couple tweaks, the pinot from a fontana kit using some of the tweaks on this forum, and the concord using welch's. I won't be...

    Foamy wine

Seems strange for c02. Normally it dissipates pretty quickly, but this stuff is hanging around. You don't think it is starsan related?... I did add the fpack.

    Foamy wine

I should mention that I racked it over a week ago into the carboy from the primary. Now that I am sitting here thinking about it, it did get racked a little later than the instructions said it should. The sg was about .996 when I racked it. It is now .990. I have read that the yeast eats...

    Foamy wine

Hey guys, Anybody know what this foam is? I am doing a WE island mist kit and am degassing. There was a bit of foam in the carboy before I degassed, and now there is more than when I started and it does not seem to be dissipating. I used starsan (for the first time) to sanitize. I followed...
