Other Bit of fun visualizing the hobby!

Thanks. Glad you all like it! I just reaslised I had loads of data and not much done with it! I also work in BI designing Tableau dashboards and people totally go overboard. Simplicity is key, otherwise it may look good but won't tell you much.

Other Bit of fun visualizing the hobby!

For a while now I've been keeping logs of my winemaking and consumption. I've created a few visualizations online that people may find interesting. Happy to answer questions on how it's done! https://public.tableau.com/profile/will5239#!/vizhome/Wine_5/Overview?publish=yes

RJ Spagnols Which kit would you pick 16L or 12L w/skins?

It's quite similar in style but you can definitely tell the SLM is the better kit. It's got more tannins and oak, and has a lot more depth of flavour. The Washington Merlot is a nice easy drinker. The SLM is more intense and I think that's why many of my friends prefer the Washington Merlot...

RJ Spagnols Which kit would you pick 16L or 12L w/skins?

I've done the 16l Kenridge Showcase Australian Shiraz, 16l WE Selection Vieux Chateau du Roi and the 12l (with skins) WE World Vineyard Washington Merlot (note this is ~10.4l of juice and ~1.6l of skins). The 12l Washington Merlot is hands down my most popular wine. Everyone who has tried it...

    WineXpert Anyone know for sure???

Interesting discussion. I know nothing about this subject but found this link which is quite interesting... http://midwestwinepress.com/2014/01/16/labruscas-really-make-bad-wine/

Other Heads up for wine makers in Europe

I live in the UK and have found it impossible to source certain yeasts, oak products and Eclipse wine kits, until now. I came across this Swedish Homebrewshop and managed to get hold of: BM 4x4 yeast Oak spirals 1/2" bottle filler Eclipse Barossa Valley Australian Shiraz (the also stock the...

WineXpert Winexpert World Vineyard Washington Merlot

Yes I agree, follow the instructions on your first kit, it will turn out fine leaving it in. Good luck and sure it will go well. You should have a great wine in a few months.

WineXpert Winexpert World Vineyard Washington Merlot

The sorbate (when used in conjunction with potassium metabisulfite) basically kills the yeast and prevents any refermentation - useful if you plan on back sweetening your wine. No need to add it just because you plan on bulk aging your wine. However some people can detect the taste of sorbate...

WineXpert Winexpert World Vineyard Washington Merlot

Yes I just add it as per the instructions right before I degas. I never add the Sorbate though unless I'm going to back sweeten at some point in the future. Bear in mind that degassing always takes me a lot longer than the Winexpert instructions say...

WineXpert Winexpert World Vineyard Washington Merlot

I made this kit about a year ago. The only difference I made to the instructions were botting it at 3 months and adding some extra oak during aging. Now 12 months in it's tasting really good and is the most popular red I've made. It started being drinkable at 3 months and everyone who has...

Vineco Cellar Craft Showcase Australian Shiraz

I'm trying to choose my next red wine to make and was wondering if anyone has made the Cellar Craft Showcase Australian Shiraz before? This is the only Shiraz kit with skins available in the UK so want to check that this makes a good, full bodied Shiraz, as you would expect from a decent Aussie...

    WineXpert Eclipse Stags Leap Merlot

Thanks for the tips. Decent oak, decent yeasts and fresh skins are hard/impossible to source here in the UK. Out of interest, does adding raisins give your wine a raisiny taste, or does it just boost the body and tannin level? I once had a big Spanish wine that tasted of raisins and wasn't...

    WineXpert Eclipse Stags Leap Merlot

I checked my notes and, although I can't tell for sure, am pretty sure I didn't add the sorbate. I still have 29 bottles so can see how it changes over the next year. What would you suggest to improve the nose and body on future premium kits? I've started adding a tsp of tannin...

Vineco New range replacing Kenridge Showcase

These kits are now available in the UK for a reasonable £74.95, the same price as the kits they replaced. Makes the US pricing seem a bit odd.

    WineXpert Eclipse Stags Leap Merlot

On Monday a friend hosted a dinner party/red wine tasting evening. Everyone took their favourite bottle of red wine (around the £10 mark) and then we did blind tasting to rate them. I took a bottle of the Stag's Leap which has now aged for 12 months. I was expecting it to be popular and was...

Vineco New range replacing Kenridge Showcase

Ouch! That's the same price as the Cellar Craft Showcase 18l range. Doesn't make much sense to me unless that is full retail price and real prices will be heavily discounted.

    WineXpert Winexpert LE16

Thanks both, confirmed what I feel also. Will certainly be making the Grenache Cabernet with Grape Skins and probably the Blanc de Noir. This looks like a really interesting wine and bottles of Blanc de Noir command a high price in the UK and don't appear that easy to come by. Cheapest I could...

    WineXpert Eclipse Stags Leap Merlot

The PG Verduzzo is really good, probably my favourite white I've made so far. The official description is accurate regarding the profile of this one. There is a nice hint of honey and pineapple along with nice citrus notes - I even detected the pear in there too. It's got good acidity balanced...

    WineXpert Eclipse Stags Leap Merlot

Just finished bottling and drank the leftovers. This is amazing wine, packs a real punch both in flavour and alcohol! I'm going to run a charity wine tasting at my work probably in November. Will take 6 wines: Eclipse SLM World Vineyard Washington Merlot Selection Vieux Chateau du Roi Eclipse...
