    Additive storage containers.....

So I bought 1 pound bags of tannin, nutrient, k-meta, and energizer. I’d like to transfer them into something other than the plastic bags they came in. For A) ease of getting to, and B) to keep the contents from spilling out. I was thinking of 1/2 pint size mason jars. Any thoughts or suggestions?

    Who’s your go-to place?

So, besides your local brew shop, who I try to stop by as much as I can, who do you turn to for your supplies. Let’s face it, our local shops aren’t always the cheapest but they are convenient. I’ve been going to www.midwestsupplies.com for the bigger purchases as they offer free shipping on...

    Sometimes bad is actually good.....

Well, I was downstairs going through my over 3 year old stuff seeing what needed replaced (so happy I’m getting back into this wonderful hobby). Of course all my tubing was junk just sitting in a box, mesh bag got tossed, then I came to my double lever hand corker......main shaft rusted...

    Bentonite question

I purchased some bentonite from my local brew shop (www.bacchus-barleycorn.com) and the directions we're to mix 1oz bentonite to 20oz boiling water. 20oz seems like a lot compared to other bentonite instructions saying to add 1-2 tsp per gallon. Just wanted to see if this sounds right to...

    Acid Test Kit

Hey everyone! It’s been nearly 3 years since I’ve made any wine but this year I’m getting back into it! Already have a “super sugar method” frozen Welch's in secondary and am trying a 100% juice white grape that I want to ferment dry then try my hand at back sweetening. Not to mention I have 3...

    Progress on first vine!

So this is my first vine in its 2nd summer of growth! Still don't have a clue as to what I'm doing, but they seem to be doing pretty good. I know the first few years the grapes are small and sugar content us very low, but they aren't dead! https://goo.gl/photos/xqkKtjyu25qHvy7DA...

    My first Grape Vine

So early 2015 or late 2014 I planted a grape "stick" I purchased at Home Depot. Wasn't in to making wine back then, but it was a thought that maybe if this stick grew and produced that MAYBE I would get into wine making someday. Well I planted it and then life got the better of me and...

    Wine pump?

So I've been doing some research on a wine pump, and as much as u would love the AIO budget constraints make that hard right now. Found this pump at harbor freight and wanted to get some opinions on it. Says it pulls up to 28" which is more than needed for our application. Suggestions...

    Home Depot Wine Rack "Kit"

Hey everyone! It's been a while since I've been here so I thought I would jump on and share my experiences with my new wine rack kit I got at Home Depot! The kit came packaged nice and compact: Only had to do a few minor modifications to it, which included: Cutting them to size and...

    Brake bleeder degas question

So I bought a harbor freight brake bleeder tonight as I was tired of splashing wine out with the whip. I want to know at what point do you call it "degased"? I got the bleeder to 25" with very little CO2 coming up. How far do you take it, as I feel you could go on forever to get every last CO2...

    Primary producing heat?

Hey guys, so I made the jump from my small 1 gallon bucket all the way up to a 7.5 gallon bucket (yes I know I was told to start there anyway). So my question is with my little bucket I had to keep a heater on it to keep the temp around the 72-75* mark. With my 7.5 one (only about 6 gallons in...

    Degasses or air?

Ok, what's the difference in bubbles between degassing and air bubbles? I k ow my first batch was rushed so I didn't really pay much attention to the bubbles, but now I need some guidance. I have a drill mounted whip and I go about 5 seconds one direction, then switch and go 5 seconds the other...

To lid, or not to lid.....

That is the question. I'd love to hear an explanation as to why some people say to cover with a lid (snapped down, with airlock on) and others say to loosely cover with a towel? I've watched DOZENS of videos and half show them snapped down, and half show them loosely covered. What's the REAL...

    Sanitation every time question

So I just want to be sure what I'm doing is within acceptable sanitation guidelines while I'm doing the "cheapy" recipes. I would hate to start a bad practice when I get into the more pricier kit wines later on. Basically I keep all my supplies (plastic spoon, thermometer, hydrometer, test...

    Hydrometer and ABV%

So my first batch is slowing WAY down to the point of the SG hasn't moved in 24 hours. However here's my question, more of a "I need verification" than question. 11 days ago I started my very first batch of grape concorde concentrate wine. I'm only doing 1gal batches right now. I started...

    Did I "oooops"?

So I started a new batch of the "super sugar" method while my first batch of regular ol' grape concentrate from a can was just beginning to finish up last night. The weather has turned a bit colder so my basement is around 63-64* so I decided to put one of those electric floor heaters by both...

    Salute! from Kansas City

Ciao everyone! I wanted to stop in here an introduce myself a little. My name is Edward and have a fairly large family background in winemaking! The only problem is it passed my Dad and brother so I have no first hand experience. HOWEVER after finding out that both my grandfather's on both...

Just making sure on my first batch....

Ok, thought I would start a new thread with the updates on my first batch as I thought my original thread in the "equipment" area wasn't appropriate for where the conversation could be headed. I'm now at 36 since I introduced my yeast to my wine. To recap, I had a "panic" moment yesterday and...

    Extra from primary?

Hey guys, so I'm still a few days away from taking my first batch from primary to secondary, but I have a question. IF I have to much wine for my secondary carboy, what do I do with the left over? Keep it in the primary bucket, put it in a secondary carboy even though it won't be anywhere near...

    New guy and equipment

Hello everyone! I've been a lurker for a bit and thought it was far time for me to make my first post and introduce myself. My name is Edward and have decided to get into the beginning stages of home wine brewing! I'm sure like many of you, there was someone in your family somewhere down the...
