Why aren't there grape or flowers on my vines ?

Agree with both of you. I was assuming Vinifera which is the local trend here.

Why aren't there grape or flowers on my vines ?

From the texts I have read, year 3 is the first year to consider leaving grapes clusters on the vines. I have heard some vineyards wait till year 4. Let’s the vine concentrate on building root structures and vigour.

My first Strawberry Wine w/a question....

Will throw another suggestion your way. I have been making strawberry wine for many years in a Rosé style that is dry, quite thin but a family favourite. The smell is like strawberry lollies and when chilled to white wine temperature, on a nice summers day a bottle goes down extremely well...

Come on spring!!! What's it like at your vineyard?

Just finished the season in southern hemisphere and we were in drought by the end of spring and more rain at the end of summer than all of spring. So the season looked completely flipped. We picked about a month early with the grapes completely confused and it looked like spring with the nets...

    Headspace bulk aging

If it was me I would be thinking, next rack will make this even worse. Sacrificial last smaller carboy that keeps getting smaller is good and you still have the same amount of wine... and I can sleep at nights.

How to start a new cordon on established trunk

Thanks Balatonwine, yes I have done similar. Will dig out the photos. And some nice grapes there! I saw a Youtube clip on moving vines and the guy spoke in the commentary about "coaxing" a new bud on a trunk by cutting the trunk at the required location. That did not make sense to me. Has...

How to start a new cordon on established trunk

Thanks BigH, This is great thanks. Definitely good ideas and totally agree, I had forgotten there are lots of buds that do start just above splice (which all these vines have) so cultivating a couple of these to develop over a few seasons is a good plan. They are only 6 year old vines so both...

How to start a new cordon on established trunk

Hi, I have 20 vines along a fence that have been growing well. Syrah vines trained on cordons and spur pruned VSP. Each year the fruit gets a little higher on the fence based on last years wood etc. The cordons are higher than I want anyway so dropping them is of interest. With my limited...

    Grape disease?

Down in NZ I get this a lot with a high rainfall over our summers. If you are interested in playing with a few bunches / plants try using a milk solution. I have had some success with this even after the fungus has started. 1 part milk / 9 parts water. I use low fat milk to help keep the smell...

    Post your labels here

Haha yes but a oncer I hope. The West fence was the one with vines 3y and older and not a lot of grapes. East fence Syrah this year and front yard Cab Franc next year. That said the blend is actually quite good.

Some awesome labels above. Really fantastic everyone. I got a wonderful photo the other day that had to be made into a label. Completely different style to the above and no where near the artistic skill (if only!).

    Post your labels here

Yes we live in Wellington about the middle of NZ. Between a lot of grape growing areas. Unfortunately I have not made it to the US as yet but would love to one day.

    Post your labels here

Morris those labels are extremely good and very professional. Very natural artistic style and extremely bold. They would make your wine stand out in a crowd. I also like fading on the edges for depth. Possibly a little too bold for me (I don't have the wine quality to match) but a stunning job...

    Spray damage to grapes

Carboy, that sounds like something that might even make a grown man cry... I hope you didn't lose too many. Garymc, I didn't kill anything and it was using a standard known spray copper spray that has worked for me in the past. Was spraying for powdery mildrew after rain and my Syrah vines...

Weight of picked grapes bunches to quantity of finished wine.

Thanks all. Always seem to end up picking amounts that then stretch into multiple sized vessels... At least I have a bit of a guide now to start. And just to check is this stems, spiders and all or after destemming?

Weight of picked grapes bunches to quantity of finished wine.

What values do you use and does it vary by grape type?

    Spray damage to grapes

Has anyone ever caused damage to fruit development by spraying at the wrong time or by spray concentration?
