    New Wine Room

Over the years I've learned that I'm not really suited for taping/spackling (sp?). I'd rather pay someone who knows what they're doing. If I do it I always remember where I had problems, high/low spots, etc. Plus they're much faster. When I finished my son's room in the basement, it took my...

    New Wine Room

John, Thanks for the reply. I wish I had more time/room/$$ to expand. The only thing expanding lately is my waistline.

    New Wine Room

John, looks like a great project/investment. Just curious though, you have 120/208 not 120/240 power to your house? Usually 120/208 is associated with 3 ph. power.

    Wine Kit delivered and leaking?

I had a similar experience. Some kits are double bagged. I'd put the bag in the tub to rinse it off and see where the leak was and found that out. No damage to the inner bag. For some reason wine had gotten into the outer bag (during filling?).

    removing labels easily

Overnight+ soak in oxy. Most of the front labels come off easily, the back ones are more of a pain. I use a single edge razor to cut through the foil and use a single device Decora electrical plate http://www.homedepot.com/p/Leviton-Decora-1-Gang-Wall-Plate-Light-Almond-R59-80401-00T/100669048...

    Tips and helpful info

Well, finished starting the WE Cali Trinity Red about 45 min ago. Cleaned the carboy from yesterday (it'd been soaking in oxyclean since bottling). Changed out the oxy solution that my bottles were soaking in and a couple of other things. I'll try and stay on topic too. Tip: I usually soak my...

    Tips and helpful info

You could offset that by measuring the hydrometer's reading in water with and without the string/tape. Then adjust your next readings accordingly. I use my hydrometer to get me in the ballpark. I'm not too worried about being, "Dead on balls accurate." Since I'm awake at this ungodly hour, I...

For those who enjoy a nice cold beer

"I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day." -- Lyndon B. Johnson I'd heard that one attributed to either Dean Martin or Frank Sinatra, but never LBJ.

    DIY Vacuum Pump

Steve, I've been debating getting a pump/filter for a little while now. Recently took a friend's mini-jet for a test drive. Because I'd set it in a drip pan whose sides were a little too high, the intake didn't get a great seal. The result was air in my first gallon or so. It didn't impress me...

    Airlock and cheap vodka

Another vote for vodka. My airlocks are cheap dates, they don't need Grey Goose or Ketel One. Military Special (Only sold in PX/BX/Class six stores) works just as well. If I can just ignore those looks from the cashier as I ask for a pint, "No, I swear it's for my airlock." Also effective as a...

Chiu, do you have an updated link for the vac pump? The All Electronics link is no longer valid.

    filling bottles

physics911, the only time I had any significant "drippage" is when I got a piece of hops stuck in the valve. Otherwise, I get less than half an ounce.

    Elmer's first boil

elmer, Your beer looks great. Any wheat in your grains? That might account for the cloudiness/haze. In addition to, or instead of, Irish Moss you could also have added Whirlfloc tablets about ten minutes before the end of the boil. Don't know if I've already suggested this, but you could also...

    Penalized for unnecessary racking.

Deezil/Manley, Thanks for the support and clarification, so to speak.

    Penalized for unnecessary racking.

Sooo, Had to rack my Pinot Gris off those damn "gross lees" (?). Okay, that went well. Looked at the cab I had racked two weeks ago and it looked like it still had 3/4 to 1" of schist at the bottom. I figured since I had all the stuff out anyway I might as well re-rack that too. Turns out that's...

    Elmer's first boil

You should find that carbonation will increase with time (to a degree). Tasting at least once a week allows you to see how taste and carb'ing develop. As you become more experienced and develop a "pipeline", you're less inclined to sample prematurely.

    Not Fermenting

If you're concerned about the viability of your yeast, you could also "proof" it. Before you start any of your winemaking, take a cup of warm water add two tablespoons of sugar (cane sugar, corn sugar or DME (Dried Malt Extract)) stir in the yeast and cover with saran/plastic wrap. In a couple...

    Elmer's first boil

It might just take a little longer. No need to dry star san. It devolves into something the yeast can eat. Ferrari Avvintore Bottle Sanitizer. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001D6FUDC/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 Put star san (or the sanitizer of your choice) in the bottom, invert the bottle over...

    Confused about priming cider

You might try cracking one open just a bit, just enough to start hearing the CO2 escape and then stop. See if you can gradually bleed off some of the pressure. Was the cider cold? Did it sit in the fridge for long? I've never made cider, so I'm just throwing some beers tricks out there. Pete
