    Spiced Wine

I used four sticks of cinnamon and two teaspoons of clove during fermentation of 5g of cider. The clove is powerful and can easily be overdone. I might do less clove next time.

Growing Grapes on a Small Island in Michigan

I’m growing Marquette on 8 foot rows at 8 feet vine spacing. I have very fertile soil and the vigor is insane. I wish I had gone 16 foot spacing. Depending on your soil results, I’d think hard about the vine spacing.

    Need some help

Check all your trucks. I’ve had Eutypa dieback on a few vines that dramatically affected the nutrient flow to the leaves and looked like iron deficiency before vine died. You will see canckers in the truck wood if you have an issue.

Moving to bladder press next season.

    #35 basket press

I rebuilt the oak the same dimensions as the original rotted oak was. I drilled all the holes on a drill press before I put it back together. Pain in the butt but it looked nice when I finished.

    #35 basket press

#35 grape basket press (13 gallon/52 liter). Rebuilt last season with new oak slats and stainless steel screws. Worked great pressing 400 pounds of grapes this season. Basket is 15" inside diameter and 18"deep. Cast iron drip tray is 13" from the bottom of the legs. Made by Baccellieri Bros...

    Brix 21, wet weather, Marquette

I’d wait a couple weeks. With my Marquette, I wait for the acid to drop to get the pH into the 3.4s. This usually gets my brix to 24-26, but I’m more a fan of adding acidulated water to drop the brix, than trying to drop the acid.

    using sulfur on marquette grapes

I use it every spray with captan or mancozeb. Works wonderfully and had no issues.

    Lime sulfur ratio

I used 1 cup of sulforix (27% CaPolysulfide) in 1.5 gallons of water.

    Back-sweeten with Grape concentrate.

I did this last fall with my Riesling. I used Alexander’s Riesling concentrate (70 Brix) to back sweeten my dry that had already gone through cold stabilization and was clear. It did cloud a little after the addition, but I let it rest for week and then filtered before bottling. It came out...

    supplies question for trellising

I used mono for catch wires on my Marquette and it was a disaster. This fall, I'll be replacing with high tensile. My vines were insanely vigorous and the mono stretched under the load. It was great to work with and might be ok if you have close vine to vine spacing to keep the vigor down, but I...

    Black Rot?

No oil used, but things fell apart after the captan spray. I mixed the captan with sulfur though (and sevin)? It will take forever but do I need to pull the damaged berries to save the good ones?

    Black Rot?

These are four year Marquettes. They've had two sprays of Dithane/Sulphur/Sevin and a third spray of Captan/Sulphur/Sevin. Leaves are prestine but all clusters have brown spots as in the pictures. Am I screwed already in June?

What is wrong with my grapes

They could spray before planting, but usually that's with glyphosate. Not sure about pre-plant spraying using 2,4D.

What is wrong with my grapes

The edges of the leaves in the second picture look like typical 2,4D damage. Any weed spraying going on around the vines?

Calcualting free so2 requirements.."More Wine" contradiction?

This calc will tell you what you need to add as well as what the desired free target is based on pH. https://winemakermag.com/1301-sulfite-calculator I suspect the two different numbers you see are based on the desired MOLECULAR SO2 level. Most use 0.8 mg/l as the standard molecular level...
