    Pears!

"Do you think I could add acid later and be ok?" My understanding is you want to adjust it earlier rather than later. Adjust half way and give it a couple more days and check again. I'm curious how much actual juice you got from the pears themselves after pressing? Paul

    Pears!

I bottled it a couple of months ago, I blended it with apple wine I made at the same time. I would do the following if I did it again. Use a mesh bag that is made for this as the pulp was unbelievable and very difficult to remove. It took forever using two different wire mesh kitchen type...

Anyone use a long hose for moving their wine?

Any issues with using the 1/2 hose with lets say a stray grape or skin getting stuck in the line? I suppose could run it through a coarse strainer to remove any of those first. I usually don't worry about them as I just dump the whole bucket into the container.

Anyone use a long hose for moving their wine?

So after this years wine pressing and carrying 52 gal of wine into my basement (where is everyone who wants my wine on this day?), leaving a long trail of wine droplets to clean up along the way. I thought of setting up a large (3/4) reinforced type clear plastic tubing in my garage to bring it...

    Help with MLF

I have limited experience, but wine kits don't use MLF as I was told. MLF is the conversion of malic acid to latic via a bacteria (Oenococcus oeni) that you either inoculate into the recently fermented wine (different schools of thought here as to when). This can occur naturally in red wines...

    Pears!

I recently did a pear wine. This is what I did with information from others. I had a total of 74 lbs of cored pears. I had froze them prior to coring them. I then added water and sugar to a get a sg of 1.090 added acid blend and tartaric acid ( I blended more of the tartaric then the acid...

First time pear wine- need some advise

I added some acid blend which contains 45% citric acid yesterday. I finished it off today with just tartaric. I did about 100 g tartaric total, and about 65 g blend to get a 6.0g/l TA. Pitched the yeast this morning and waiting for some activity.

First time pear wine- need some advise

So i cored my semi frozen pears today and got a total of 74lbs! I mashed them with a potato masher as much as I could but had to transfer the batch to a larger fermenting container as it was too small. I added 7.4 gal of water along with 5 gm of Kmeta. I also added as of now, 12.5 lbs of sugar...

First time pear wine- need some advise

Sounds like freezing is the way to go...can I use my basket press to press the fruit?. its a stainless steel basket type, not your typical fruit press, but the holes are pretty small. I'll pick up some apples to blend as well any particular variety to suggest?

First time pear wine- need some advise

So my pear tree gave me about two coolers full of small pears this year(can't remember the variety). So what else can one do with something nutritious as fruit, but to turn it into alcohol. So I've read so many different ways to make fruit wine(other than grape), some boil the pears, some...

problems with a starter yeast culture

Yes, mistype on the SG,(corrected). I have since made a batch of just sugar water not too much sugar, but it was enough to get the yeast going. I added some wine and it seems to be going along nicely so I'll increase the batch size slowly and see how it goes...

problems with a starter yeast culture

So some background, I made some red zin this past fall and all seemed to be going along well enough. I pressed the grapes and placed them into my stainless steel vessel(floating top type) prior to racking it off into my barrel. I pressed just above 1.00 . After a short period in the barrel, I...

    wine press question

oring I removed the large nut today and found a grove in the bottom on the lower portion of the press. It seemed to be made to fit an o-ring, so off to the local hardware store (old school type- never find in home depot). I dropped one in and retightened the nut...no more wobble! It would have...

    wine press question

New to wine making and I will be pressing by first batch of Cab in the coming week. In getting my press cleaned off I noticed the main vertical "screw" a bit wobbly, but not too much. I looked under it an noticed a large nut which appeared tight, however the whole shaft spins in its sleeve. Is...

    must cap tool- ideas?

I decided to have a local welder make one for me at a pretty reasonable price. I need a longer reach than the smaller potato masher types... but thanks for the replies.

    Wanted to buy: Manual Crusher/Destemmer

for those looking to purchase a new one, I had found a company in Canada that had decent pricing. I was looking at an all stainless steel motorized unit. With shipping and fees it would have been 950.00 to my door. The US dollar is strong right now against the Canadan dollar so there is some...
