One vine ripens a month before others

Do you have any more detail? Where is it in relation to the other vines? Was it planted at the same time? What else is interesting about the environment? Near any buildings?

Getting back to the OP's question, this PDF has a lot of great info on spacing, and how much wine to expect, among other things... How Much Wine Can a Small Vineyard Produce.pdf

    stuck corks

Here's what I think... The sugar in the "sweet wine" is gluing the cork to the inside of the neck. I dunno how to fix it except to maybe rinse the inside of the neck with a little water after filling and before corking. Or, I could be completely full of it, and I don't mean wine. ;)

    The Heat

All that heat back east is sucking in the marine influence for us. Yesterday's high was 74, overnight t'was 54. Daytime RH an the low 50% range. Even up in the north county/Paso Robles area it's unseasonably cool.

    Drought

The drought hasn't really affected us much. We're in a Mediterranean climate and don't get any appreciable rain from April or May until September/October or later. We're establishing vines for dry-farming, so I water them deeply about 1x per week. The vineyard is over on the far hill, away...

    Drought

g=gallons? Are you sure your bill isn't in cubic feet? At 5,000 gallons per month, that's only about 176 gallons per day, which is low for 2 or more people for in house use only. However, at 5,000 cubic feet, that's 37,400 gallons per month, or about 1,250 gallons per day, a more reasonable...

    Solar powered irrigation system

There are many ways to do this. I'm considering a low power/low GPM system to pump surface water to a storage tank above my vineyard, which will gravity feed to the drip system. Keep in mind that, in solar systems, everything should be measured/calculated/verified etc to maximize efficiency and...

    15 lbs of yellowjackets!

We have a couple of in-ground yellowjacket nests down in the woods. None of the hardware store sprays would even touch them. I think they just got stronger. So, I employed a technique my dad used back in the 80s. I set up the shop vac down there and propped up the end of the wand by the hole...

Can i plant in august: California

You don't say where in California, (except northern, in another post). Around here, (San Luis Obispo) August is about the hottest month. I'd consider having the nursery hold them until late September or October, about when the rainy season started. Else, I think I'd pre-dig all of the holes a...

    Winemaking for Church

I also recommend the kit wine approach to feet-wetting. :) As rank newbies, we've planted grapes this spring, made our first kit, and taken delivery of the next kit. Kits give you a head start on some of the techniques, terminologies, and equipment you will need. Then during your local harvest...

    Cheap Wine

I know people that buy a bottle, and try it in the parking lot before they leave. If they like it, they run right back in and buy more. That's how fast it moves around here...

    "Yeast is yeast."

rjb222's post in the current Apple Cider thread reminded me of this oldie... It was spring, and Farmer Bill was having trouble with his horses. It sees that the birds were building nests in their manes. He tried all sorts of things to keep them away from the manes, but nothing worked. Finally...

Why Don't local restaurants serve local wine?

Continued from above... 4) Here, the wineries have events for the public and their wine clubs, and sometimes partner with local restaurants to supply the appetizers, food and wine pairings, or entire meals. That's a great way to build a relationship between the 2. The restaurant gets exposure...

Why Don't local restaurants serve local wine?

A few observations after reading this thread: 1) Now I see why home wine making is so popular some places. I didn't realize that buying wine, beer and spirits was still so difficult in so many places. We're apparently spoiled here in CA by being able to get alcohol at any drug or grocery...

Removing labels... 2 different kinds and how to tell the difference

I know there are a lot of posts here about removing labels. Over the weekend, I cleaned 30 bottles for bottling our first kit. Here is an observation that can make removing labels easier, and possibly affect your bottled purchasing decisions. It has mine. If you look through the bottle (clear...

Copa Di Vino on Shark Tank this Friday, ABC

They hosed the scheduling, and he wasn't on until last Friday, the 13th. 20 minutes devoted to him... He's the first entreprenure to come back for a second appearance. It's become so popular that he needs another bottling line. After some discussion, Cuban, O'Leary, and Herjavec offered...
