    Poison!!

Was the higher levels in inexpensive wines due to shorter aging inexpensive get compared with more expensive wines? I would suspect that a metal like arsenic would tend to settle to the bottom and the wine would racked off of it.

White flower tops and nail polish joy

Hmm... I think that's known as a petrol smell? Could it be a petrol aroma? I could be wrong but, could it be too much sulfur?

    Post your labels here

OK... Yesterday and into Last night I had a Bottling and Back sweetening party. We spent nine hours bottling and bench testing various wines that I had made. At the end of the night we had three bottles half drunk or... half filled. One white and two reds. We decided to finish the white. That...

    Blueberry fermentation rate

I made the assumption that the S.G. was being measured by a hydrometer. Are there those who measure it with a refractometer?

    "Italians Explained..."

Wholesale... or would that be purchased from someone who got the plates with a "five finger discount" (back of a truck). Hey no offense. Remember, there's a statute of limitations on those type of aquired goods. I grew up in St Paul. My grandparents lived on the East Side and owned a bakery...

Carrot wine progress (tastes like sh*t!)

Once my LW and I went to a winery for a tasting. I commented on one young wine, "This has a earthy like smell and taste with also strong hints of wet dog fur and the excrements from its rear." Lol

    Should I be offended?

Good thread! I'm sure your sisters fiancee appreciated the gift. Just that he couldn't realize the taste benefits due to his financial shortfall. Some people aren't wine drinkers and we should not force them to be so. Besides All that does is leave more wine for those who appreciate it! I...

100 gallons wine made per year

For households in most areas in the USA, a single adult household can make up 100 gallons per year and two or more adults in a household can make up to 200 gallons per year. Is it considered wine made after fermentation of at the point of bottling? Has any amateur winemakers on this board...

What you guys do with left over after racking?

Yes you should drink... Er sample it in a good quantity. Here is you chance to note (I mean write down) the the bouquet and flavors so you can critique it as the wine ages. This information I often add to the notes I make during the tasting at bottling.

    Apple/Passion/Mango

Here should be a final recap of my Apple Passion Mango wine. My Apple Passion Mango wine earned me 4th place in the wine competition at the Minnesota State Fair under Any Other Wine category. And I thought this entry would be least likely to earn a ribbon.

    This Rookie needs HELP!!!!

Aging wine takes time. One thing I learned from this board is you have to have patience and when that fails, have even more patience. Wines can take a long time to mellow. Bitter -- do you mean sour as in too acidic? All fruit wines can take up to and beyond a year to mellow. As I side note...

    Wine for export

I agree with GreginND. At the same time it is my understanding that most European producers find the easiest way to get wine into US markets is through distributors. These distributors should have the knowledge, government contacts as well as knowledge of the transportation infrastructure and...

    Blueberry Wine Experiment

The first gallon I made with the blueberries was based on your recipe, jswordy. Except I used 4 lbs of blueberries instead of 3 lbs. The second gallon ferment was from the left over berries from the Blueberry Bliss batch. It's a variation recipe of #48 (Second wines, red) in the "Winemaker's...

    Blueberry Wine Experiment

I've been doing a little tasting of the must as it became more of a wine in the primary and It is really bitter. Although it may be too late but perhaps there is either too much tannins or acid in it. The color is less of a deep purple and more of a red than the original batch. I will continue...
