    WineXpert More winexpert woes

I'm a few days from putting on a private reserve supertuscan, and I noticed that the box started coming apart. Upon further examination, the juice is fermenting in the bag! 😢 Contact sent to winexpert, but of course, no one works on weekends. Also contacted retailer, got some sympathy. 😁

WineXpert Private reserve Lodi cab vs eclipse Lodi cab

Not even close. The private reserve version has less colour, less alcohol and less varietal character than the eclipse version. 😭 This is my 3rd private reserve kit and the second that is less than its predecessor. At least I have found a retailer that is selling them at a more reasonable price.😐

    synthetic corks

My usual supplier is having difficulty in acquiring Long Natural corks, and offered me synthetics instead. Good bad or no opinion?

    RJ Spagnols Where's the oak?

I got a cru select cab/shiraz /merlot because the brochure lists it as dry, full body and heavy oak. 30 grams of oak chips (called tea) is all it has. Yes, I have some French cubes to supplement, but I shouldn't have to! Another kit company trying to save a nickel.

Bottled Jan 1, 2017 its awesome!

    WineXpert Private reserve (etc)

So Winexpert has rebranded, renamed and re-sized its kits and retailers are claiming they are better. While I think they are too new to know for sure, I think I want to be from Missouri on this one. I'm struggling with the fact that the kits are smaller, which obviously costs less to package and...

    Cellar Craft showcase Chile Carmenere

This is my first Cellar Craft kit in over 10 years, and also first CC with grapeskins. I have to get a bit creative, as Cellar Craft has chosen to combine the sulfite and sorbate in one package. I haven't used sorbate in a decade either, so I had to find out that my eclipse kits have a 4 gram...

RJ Spagnols Super Tuscan...My first RJS kit

I have been making WinExpert kits (mostly Eclipse for the past several years) for 15 years. Recently, one of my retailers had a bunch of price increases, and the other, while he held the line on price for a while, switched to RJS products because of price and other things. I have noticed a...

    WineXpert "New" instruction set

I recently made an Eclipse Forza kit that came with the "new" standardized instructions that supposedly all Global Vintners products are now coming with. I have to state that if I had chosen this kit as my very first (I've got about 150 under my belt, and in my belly) I would have certainly...

    WineXpert Close call...I hope

I've been making kits for so long, I sometimes get a little too "autopilot" oriented. While putting on my Eclipse SLM, I poured some spring water in the primary, added the juice, rinsed the bag and added that water, stirred the bentonite into hot water and added that, put the oak powder (I...

WineXpert My year old Lodi Ranch 11 Cab vs:

Disclaimer: I'm in Canada so I pay a lot more than most of you do for commercial wine. -2012 Hester Creek reserve Cabernet Franc; We loved the 2011, so even at almost $28.00 a bottle, I didn't hesitate. Although it is structured and moderately tannic, the mouthfeel is thin, and my my Lodi Ranch...

WineXpert How old is too old

How old would a kit have to be before you are unwilling to pay full price? A WineXpert retailer (that charges $20.00 more per kit and has no loyalty program) stated that no wine kit bag is impervious to air, and that kits can start oxidizing in as little as 3 months. While I balked at that...

    WineXpert WE LE Petite Sirah/Zinfandel

After 3 years in the bottle, it's still average at best. Probably the most disappointing LE I ever made. Lacks colour, tannins and limited fruit.

WineXpert What's wrong with my basement?

White wines never clear for me. I have made (all WE) Australian Chardonnay, Liebfraumilch (4 and 6 week versions), Luna Bianca and now Eclipse Dry Creek Chardonnay, and none of them ever clear without a second dose of clarifying agents. I always use a brew belt, so I don't think temperature is...

WineXpert Selection Argentime Malbec grape pack

Selection Argentine Malbec grape pack I made this kit shortly after it first came out, and didn't like how long it took to get "good", so I resisted 'till recently. I noticed that when I loaded the bag with the grapeskins, there was a lot of liquid (almost overflowed from the same dish as...

    WineXpert Flocculation (or lack thereof)

I have noticed that the kits that I make which contain grapeskins often don't flocculate as well as I would like, particularly the Eclipse reds. I have taken to sanitizing my stainless steel strainer and bowl, and pouring the remnants from the primary fermenter through it. I have gotten...
