Controlled Experiment: Can we reuse screw top bottles and other "odd" bottle types

Sorry that I dont have complete results yet; The experiment is still ongoing. Half of the bottles have undergone tasting at this point and I'm just waiting on some warmer BBQ weather to have people over get the rest of these bottles consumed. At the risk of spoiling the anticipation, there...

Buon Vino Mini Jet Wine Filter

NOOOOOO! Check. Scratch vinegar and replace with citric acid. I agree this is optimal placement but then the wine drip must go into the filtered wine OR a 3rd vessel so that you can have a gravity siphon. I'll give it a try all the same, little to loose. If you mean the pads (ie rough...

RJ Spagnols Winery Series Super Tuscan.. ahhh.. yum...

+1 I was actually a little disappointed when I first tried mine around 4 months but found it benefited immensely from a few extra months of age. I know this is almost always true but I found it especially so in this case.

    Grape Substitute for Apfelwein

I'm sure its been done but in case any were wondering... I was picking up Apple Juice for Apfelwein while it was on sale and noted the same brand had a grape variety as well so I thought I'd give it a try in a 1 gallon to see how it would turn out. Result wasn't too bad, certainly...

Buon Vino Mini Jet Wine Filter

Yep. I always soak the filters, perhaps I'll try soaking them better if that will help. everything is set up correct as far as I can tell and I've double checked the manual a few times to be sure. Its a comfort to know its not just me at least Cleared wine for sure. Most recently I was...

Buon Vino Mini Jet Wine Filter

Does anyone else find the amount of wine going into the drip try is excessive? I think the output of the drip try for me is at least equal if not exceeding the filtered output of the wine, meaning you pretty much have to feed it back into the original wine or only end up filtering about half...

Cellar Craft Riesling Showcase Collection - Flavour Pack

I 'll be honest, I hadn't considering actually measuring the sugars. I suppose that assumes they don't use sweetener int he f pac but actual sugars that will show up as brix. Im comforted to know that its a dryer product even with the sweetener though I never thought of bottling half dry...

    WineXpert Ice wine toooooo sweet

Cut it with brandy! I like Ice Wine but really only in the occasional small dose. What I actually prefer is Ice Wine that has been cut with brandy. Give it a try, cuts the sweet down a fair bit but retains many of the same flavours. Ice Wine is even sold in this way. Its cheaper and I...

Cellar Craft Riesling Showcase Collection - Flavour Pack

So I've had great luck with past Cellar Craft Showcase collections, especially given some age. The Amerone remains my all time favourite kit and in spite of being a lighter body red, the Zweigelt is also excellent IMO. I figured I'd try one of the whites and so I started the Yakima Valley...

Controlled Experiment: Can we reuse screw top bottles and other "odd" bottle types

This experiment is still active an ongoing. A few bottles have already been sampled but more than 2/3s remain. The reason for slow progression is in order to have statistical power I need to have a big enough sample size and so I need to try wines with more than a couple people to do the...

Bulk ageing with an oak spiral

Haha. Touche. Perhaps I shouldn't go overboard. I'll heed your advice and check along as to avoid overshooting my mark but certainly surprised that the spiral didnt add more flavour. I suspect its simply a matter of reduced surface area and nothing more. I will admit they are nice and clean at...

Bulk ageing with an oak spiral

Yep, came with the kit although the instructions didnt mention it in specific and talked about oak as though I had shavings or cubes. Aprox a foot long and an inch thick

Bulk ageing with an oak spiral

Thought Id update, gave it a sample and really found the oak lacking if anything and I wouldnt say Im an Oak monster either. So figure its safe to keep it bulk aging with the oak for a year or so

Bulk ageing with an oak spiral

Thanks all Makes good sense to simply try it and see, just got a little worried as its been in there 3 months but glad to hear there is little risk of over oaking with the spiral, assumed would give off less oak than chips but seeing as it was a first for me was not too sure.

Bulk ageing with an oak spiral

Picked up an RJ Spagnols "En Primeur Negroamaro Primitivo" a while back. Since it had an infusion oak spiral I didn't include it during the primary phase as I normally would with oak. The instructions were not really clean on how to use such a spiral vs chips so I assumed I was correct in...

Controlled Experiment: Can we reuse screw top bottles and other "odd" bottle types

I think you fail to grasp a few key aspects of this experiment. A) The control in this experiment is against traditional corking methods. No other control is needed. You don't test a new medication against nothing you test it against the gold standard to see if its better/worse/no...

Controlled Experiment: Can we reuse screw top bottles and other "odd" bottle types

Updates I've had several requests for interim updates so here they are! 1) I have no official results yet as in order to preserve this experiment, I've taken the test bottles and sealed them up to avoid temptation of sampling till December. 2) Regarding leaking. As of present I can say no...

Other Advintage Kits (Including FC Collection, Moments etc.)

Anyone familiar with these kits? The company appears based in Quebec also with a distribution warehouse in BC. Sounds like the grapes/juice are international for the most part. Regardless, the short of it is that there is a supplier here in town that uses mostly these kits but looks like...

    Wine failing to clear

Time will tell I guess, too bad would have liked to here that enzymes would have been an easy fix but it is what it is :) Might have to rely on mechanical filtration if degas and time fail me. Update: Racked down again. Tasted the wine and its doesn't seem off. Young/hot if anything. With...
