    Tattoos and Winemakers

I have 7 tattoos and have obtained the basic equipment to try my hand at laying down some ink. But I haven't actually done it yet. heh

    WineXpert VR riesling first racking

So far the detail that stands out the most is that my glub-glub-glub has been replaced by a bloop-bloop-bloop.

    WineXpert VR riesling first racking

Thanks! By "sit and chill" I mean "Rob doesn't fiddle with it for a week and a half" instead of a literal reference to temperature. So far it's managed to stay between 72-74 F without any special effort on my part. I have it sitting on a table in my living room, far from the fireplace, door...

    WineXpert VR riesling first racking

This is my first time ever making wine. I'm making a VR riesling. Initial SG was 1.080, and after 6 days, it was 1.010. Temperatures have remained just over 70F throughout the process. Everything's nice & clean (and brand new, as well). I've never used a siphon before, and didn't have...

    Carboy's What do you recommend?

Yeah, I think that really *is* the moral of the story. Although I do know of a few statistically anomalous horror stories of explosive glass carboy brewing incidents.

    Carboy's What do you recommend?

I've opted for plastic, as a glass jug exploded from pressure in my kitchen once. (My mother had filled it with pennies, because she liked the look.) Fortunately nobody was anywhere near it, so we just got the heck scared out of us. Glass shrapnel covered a frightening radius. I understand...

    hi from Madison, Mississippi

Since FedEx already has it, I won't be going for the upgrade just yet. But I expect I'll be adding more gear soon enough (carboys and the like), so I can have more than one thing going on at a time. So if something breaks or proves insufficient, I'll swap out as I go. The hunt for empty...

Elaborating on my starter setup... I was referred to Northern Brewer by a beer brewing acquaintance, and have ordered all my initial supplies from there, which I expect to arrive within the next few weeks...

Do many of you actually have a Wine Cellar?

I'm far more interested in making some of the wines I already know I like to drink... and then drinking them. More exotic treats may be readily obtained at a local shop. But 6 gallon batches and any sense of variety will call for some stashing.

Do many of you actually have a Wine Cellar?

I can definitely keep just about any part of my bachelor living space from varying more than 5 degreees F during the course of a typical 24-hour period, even during fairly dramatic seasonal shifts.

Do many of you actually have a Wine Cellar?

I have yet to figure out how I'm going to manage storage. No basement, garage temps fluctuate WILDLY, and the whole place is on central heating/air (generally hovering somewhere around 72F). The (frelling huge) walk-in closet in the master suite has no vents, and I have no spouse, so maybe...

    hi from Madison, Mississippi

Thanks for the warm welcomes. I've enjoyed wines for years and tasted at least hundreds, but had always assumed that making wine was out of reach. Only recently have I been set straight on that. :D

    hi from Madison, Mississippi

I figured a riesling would be a great starter. Pairs well with a lot of the food I like and should result in a wine on the table soon enough while I pursue more adventurous follow-up pursuits.

    hi from Madison, Mississippi

I haven't made wine before, and have yet to receive the wine making stuff I've ordered up, but figured I'd chime in with a howdy. What I've seen so far reminds me of the Chemistry labs I took in college. Looks like fun. (edit: starting with a Vintners Reserve Riesling kit) -Rob
