Wine went to vinegar in barrel!

That's what I was afraid of which is why I thought I'd ask. On the bright side, I have 5 gallons of decent vinegar and the barrel didn't have much left in it anyways! Thanks!

Wine went to vinegar in barrel!

Hi All, I stupidly put some questionable wine into an oak barrel. That wine has since turned into vinegar in the barrel. The oak barrel still has some life left in it and I wonder what I need to do to make sure nothing bad happens to the next batch of good wine I age in the barrel. Do I need...

    What is this film?

Well, I did what GreginND said: pumped some wine into the carboy to float the film up and out of the carboy. Then tried to rack it and hit it with some sulfites. But, after some tasting at various intervals, concluded the whole thing was a loss. The Syrah tasted chalky, was completely flat...

    What is this film?

Hello all! Today I got around to checking on a batch of 2015 Syrah that I haven't checked on in awhile. At the top of the carboy there is a film on the top of the wine. Looks a little funky. Anyone recognize what it is? Smells a bit vinegary so it might be a loss. Cheers, nubeedubee

    Maggots near bung hole

Makes me wonder though: What did they use in the days before silicon? Rubber? Before rubber?

    Maggots near bung hole

Thanks everyone! Fruit flys make more sense. I thought it was odd to see maggots in that situation. I'll try the kmeta manvsvine.

    Maggots near bung hole

Hi All, I recently bought my first 20L Vadai barrel, prepped it according to their instructions, and filled it full of my 2012 Zin. I was using the wooden bung that comes with the barrel. I say "was" because tonight, after oaking for about 3 weeks, I noticed white little worms, I believe...

    Hello from Western PA

Iron Bridge is where I took my high school sweetheart for Prom! Delicious. Used to go to Rachel's Roadhouse too, not even sure if that's still around. I had back that way quite a bit as most of family still lives in the area.

My first batch, my first mistakes

Interesting feedback from everyone. Let me explain a little more on some of the comments: @upper: Were you doing some "testing" of your product when you posted that? :dg @arcticsid: When I said 3-4 weeks, that was the first time I tasted it. It did ferment the first time for 7-10 days, then...

My first batch, my first mistakes

Hello all yee fine ladies and gentlemen, Just finished my first batch and ouch, did something very wrong. I could tell the minute I tasted it. Ever heard of MD 20/20? My batch was slightly worse than that. If it was 1600, and your water was contaminated with feces, and you could either...

    Cheers from the Bay Area!

The first batch, which I just finished, was a Moments Red - Chianti. It was a learning process which I will go into detail in another thread in the Beginner's Area. I need some feedback and help. But I like the whole process so far. Thanks for the welcomes!
