Oil like substance floating in my wine?!

Excellent to have someone who sees things from my perspective. That's exactly what I'm doing is experimenting right now, slowly acquiring better equipment. I plan on buying those 5 gallon buckets from a local hardware store, and I already have the fancy air-lock and hydrometer. The idea of...

Oil like substance floating in my wine?!

Well I appreciate the criticism, Tom, and let me tell you I wouldn't be in this siutation, nor would I have been asking that question had I known beforehand that it wasn't a good idea to assume the dishwasher was a viable sanitizing option. I'm actually a medicinal and edible mushroom...

Oil like substance floating in my wine?!

Well my dishwasher goes through several phases which are indicated on the light, the final stage is "Sanitized" so naturally I figured it got hot enough to sanitize thing. I just bought the dishwasher this year, and it wasn't exactly some cheapo Also, how bad of an idea would it be to drink...

Oil like substance floating in my wine?!

No I didn't. I stuck them in a quality dishwasher. I figured sitting in hot steam and be sprayed with the dishwasher soap for a few hours would sanitize it, am I wrong?

Oil like substance floating in my wine?!

I should mention, that I made 2 gallon-sized fermentations of this in milk jugs, and one of the milk jugs didn't have any of this stuff floating in it, but still tasted funky Also, I did in fact only add the juice, yeast and half cup of extra sugar for higher alcohol content hopefully.

Oil like substance floating in my wine?!

I'm using the turbo yeast, as I prefer high alcohol content to good tasting wine.. That's just me. I'm using blueberry pomegranate juice that was store bought. Thanks again for your help

Oil like substance floating in my wine?!

Help folks, I just finished fermentation for 4 days, using 48 hour turbo yeast, and there's a substance floating in the wine, it doesn't look exactly like oil, but that's the closest I can come to describe it, like oil floating in water, it doesn't raise out of the water or anything.. As far as...

    First time serious brew

Well it doesn't say "NO PRESERVATIVES" anywhere, but on the other hand I don't see it saying it has them either... How will I know? Also, I didn't take a specific gravity reading this time, as it's such a small batch I didn't really want to waste any. I'll be sure to do that from now on I didn't...

    First time serious brew

I bought some 48 hour turbo yeast, sanitized 2 milk jugs in the dishwasher, filled them with about 96 oz each of blueberry pomegranate juice, and added 1 half-cup of sugar to each, 1 tablespoon of the turbo yeast, shook it up, then made the lids really loose... Should I expect some decent...

    Balloon airlock and CO²

Youre the second person to think I'd be offended by your comment.. Let me tell you folks, I was previously a member of a very immature forum, so the level of maturity Im seeing here is a grace, and in no means am I offended by helpful comments. If you read my other posts, you would understand...

    Balloon airlock and CO²

I drank about 1/3 of it, and now I have a serious stomach ache, and a buzz.

    Balloon airlock and CO²

I decided to end fermenation today. The good news is that it smells like alcohol in there, the bad news is that there a sour smell, and some soot seems to have collected on the different contours of the bottle, and Im not sure if it's dead yeast or not, Could this concoction be possible harmful?

    Balloon airlock and CO²

I'm looking around for one of these shops you folks are speaking of.. I'm from the NW of Wash state, Bellingham area. I know of some breweries around here, but that's it, and that doesn't really help me at all. The kits look a little to spendy for my budget right now, but I may check those out...

    Balloon airlock and CO²

No I didn't take that as insulting but rather insightful. As far as drinking bad tasting things go.. I would drink vanilla extract when I was a teen, so should I choose to drink it, it should be a breeze. I just want to be sure it won't cause bodily harm. Good link. I may look in to a kit...

    Balloon airlock and CO²

Good tips, I'l have to try those out with my next juice batch. My location is Washington state in USA. Flavor and taste aren't a huge goal of this first experiment of mine, but rather just the simple process of fermentation. I plan on at least using tubing in to a glass of water for an...

    Water for wine

Obviously youd want to sterilize water from a spring, if you can afford it Id think those bottles of purified water with minerals added would be good.

    Balloon airlock and CO²

My balloon still hasnt inflated.. the guide I followed said this is bad.. I did however pokes 5-6 holes in the balloon, and left fairly little air space in the jug.. Bubble production has increased dramatically, and foam seems to be stay at the same level

    I used regular yeast

Good to know. The yeast was fairly old too, but this is my first attempt so I dont expect anything spectacular.

    Balloon airlock and CO²

Well since this is my first try, I figured I wouldn't risk wasting a bunch of juice. I definitely plan on using grape juice concentrate next time. The guide I followed said this will still produce alcohol.. Im planing on mixing it with perhaps Koolaid for some flavor.
