La Bodega Port Kit any tips to make it LBV like?

I have one kit and realized that I should probably get a second, so that is on order. In the meantime, I'd like to scheme out a plan. My wife and I love LBV Ports but we are not huge fans of Tawny or Ruby. What can I do to encourage a more LBV character from this kit? I do have a Vadai...

    Suggestions for storing tubing

That is not the description of a corkidor that I have seen. Nor is it consistent with it's humidor origins (where the idea is long term storage of cigars). My understanding of a corkidor is that the corks are stored in a sealed environment where all humidity is in KMeta. This should prevent...

    Suggestions for storing tubing

You have to store it somewhere. And before I posted to this older thread, that was the last unchallenged advice. I pointed out that it didn't work out for me, and others have said the same.

    Suggestions for storing tubing

Thanks for the confirm. I will stop storing my tubing in the corkidor.

    Suggestions for storing tubing

I know this thread is old, but I am wondering if anyone here has had problems storing tubing in a corkidor. I tried doing this and my tubing became cloudy and sticky. I am pretty careful about cleaning. so I don't think that there was anything in the tubing. But it did sit in the corkidor...

How bad is it to drink gross lees?

Thanks for the reassurance. I've been under the assumption that she is OK, but it's been gnawing at me. Plans are underway to move my operations to a secured room. :rdo

How bad is it to drink gross lees?

She said that it was yummy but that she had a bit of a stomach ache this morning.

How bad is it to drink gross lees?

After primary fermentation on a batch of plum wine, I poured the top of the remaining gross lees into a wine bottle to help separate off any remaining wine. I had already decanted most of this, but was holding out for a little more. This morning, I discovered that my mother-in-law drank about...

5 months in my barrel has started leaking

Thanks Rocky! I really think that is the right approach. I'll rack my Red Mountain cab tonight and try tightening the barrel up next .

5 months in my barrel has started leaking

Well, I waxed up everywhere that looked like it could be related to the leak and today I see a pool of wine on one end and a stain on the side spreading out from under one of the bands. I guess it must be leaking from under the band and then following the seam between the staves to the end of...

Free wine testing in the Twin Cities

Free SO2/PH/TA testing in the Twin Cities Not sure if this would be better in the classified section, but I'll post here and let any mods set me straight. I have a Vinmetrica SC-300 and the reagents are only supposed to be good for 6 months. For me this means through about mid June. I...

5 months in my barrel has started leaking

Thanks for the encouragement. I am already using the vented silicone bung. I will do the KMeta/canning wax tonight. Rocky, you may be right about the leak just being visible now. Or maybe it was really really slow before and picked up with the weather. I guess on the plus side, it is...

5 months in my barrel has started leaking

Is there anything that I can do about it while it is full? My wife bought me a 23L Vadai barrel for Christmas. It came a little late --mid January. I preped it early February and it sealed up well. I've done two back-to-back Chardonnay barrel ferments in at two weeks each with it no...

Can glass carboys even be sanitized?

The permission that I am looking for is from Five Star. In the past (on other forums) I have shared responses from employees of companies that I have contacted and been told that they wish I hadn't done so. It seems to me that it is in the best interest of Five Star to refute this sort of...

Can glass carboys even be sanitized?

I have a response from Five Star basically discrediting the article WRT Star San. I am asked for permission to post the response here and will do so if permission is given.

Can glass carboys even be sanitized?

Not all glass is the same, and I don't know what kind of glass is used to make carboys. However Mr Pambianchi's article, which he notes appeared in the June 2012 issue of Winemaker Magazine, suggests that even kmeta is inappropriate for sanitizing carboy glass. I created this thread more...

Can glass carboys even be sanitized?

As a quick follow-up, the articles reference really leave very little in the way of options for cleaning glass carboys. This suggests scepticism is in order. In his article, Dan Pambianchi recommends Natural 2X Concentrated Laundry Detergent (Seventh Generation Inc.) CGA Pro-Zyme CGA Super...

Can glass carboys even be sanitized?

I started making wine a year ago and have been using Star San as a sanitizer for all of my equipment. I thought that it was doing well, but recently ran across some articles that suggest that Star San may be a poor choice for sanitizing my glass containers. The information that I found was...

    WineXpert Blending Kits

I think that your plan is excellent. I will be doing something similar with two chardonnays (WE Ausie and French chardonnays) that I have done recently. These were successive barrel ferments, one followed by one month of battonage, the second just two weeks of battonage. I tasted the first...

Star San for santitizing wine bottles

I'm no authority, but I have been using Starsan with an Avvinator and a bottle tree. Three or four pumps and then hang the bottle on the tree. No problems with foam.
