My husband and I are aspiring hobbyist farmers. We have, over the past several years, accumulated multiple parcels of forested, river front, and lake front land in the same small town in southern New Hampshire within walking distance of each other. We worked extremely hard and made many sacrifices to cobble together the money necessary to invest in farm equipment and land for the purpose of building a self-sustainable property. Our plans include developing a small trout pond, raising chickens for eggs and meat, and raising turkeys for meat. We will have multiple vegetable gardens and medicinal and gourmet herb gardens. There will be multiple blueberry, raspberry, blackberry and elderberry patches. there are a couple of decorative quince bushes. We also have pecan, almond, and hazelnut trees and bushes in our orchard, as well as apples, peaches, and plums. There will be at least two vineyards for table and wine grapes. We have enough land, we could clear more and have additional vineyards or berry patches or grazing land. We have set aside some land for a solar installation large enough to power the house and irrigation equipment as a way to save on high New England energy costs. Development of our three properties is an ongoing work in process.
