    Grapefruit Wine

Turned out pretty darn good. This is one that needs to age for a bit. I've not made it since this batch though.

    Making Sassafras Wine

And cigarettes used to be good for you. Is making a batch of sassafras wine going to give you cancer? Probably not. But, the safrol in it is know to have bad side effects. Not just cancer. I'd just watch how much I consume. That is all.

    Making Sassafras Wine

Probably not any more so than all the crap they put in our food. :h

    Making Sassafras Wine

Be careful there. Sassafras is considered by the USDA as a carcinogen. It's not allowed to be used in commercial foodstuffs unless the safrol oil has been removed. http://www.nal.usda.gov/wicworks/WIC_Learning_Online/support/job_aids/harmful.pdf

Pumpkin wine with LOTS of sediment.

Last night I racked the clear stuff into a 2 quart milk bottle that I have and put the rest of the sludge into another carboy (only had 1 gallons left) and stuck that sucker in the fridge. Thanks for the advice!

Pumpkin wine with LOTS of sediment.

Thought about that. The room is pretty chilly, but not fridge temps. I might try that. Anyone have a cetrifuge I can borrow??

Pumpkin wine with LOTS of sediment.

Here's a pic of the wine. The top looks very nice. :h As for transferring to another carboy, I may have trouble getting that sediment to move through the hose.

Pumpkin wine with LOTS of sediment.

I have 1 gallon of pumpkin wine. I more or less pulled the recipe out of my nether regions. I used canned pumpkin which gave me a LOT of sediment. I added sparkaloid when I transferred to the secondary. Racked once and was pumping a lot of sediment. So, after 3 months, I have about 50%...

    Cleaning a hydration pack

I recently took up hiking on a regular basis. I bought one of those CamelBak® hydration packs that goes into a daypack. It’s basically a plastic bladder with a drinking tube so you don’t have to take off your pack to get water. My question: It needs to be periodically cleaned and they sell...

Methanol / Methyl alcohol .... Question

Moonshiners throw away the “heads” and “tails” when distilling. The highest concentrations of fusel alcohols are in the first bit that comes out and the last. One test is to burn some of it. If the flame is blue, you are OK, but if it’s yellow, then there is some bad stuff in there. However...

    Grapefruit wine question

Yes, rack, degass, and then add campden. As long as your head space is good, let the sucker sit for another month and see what happens. There are several additives that can be used to help clear a wine. I’ve never actually used any of them. Now, when I made grapefruit wine, it was pretty...
