    smell during fermentation?

    I have my primary in the living room. I love the smell. In fact I put a little must in a spray bottle and us it as cologne :D

    Well I put the primary in the den. The fiancee is loving the fact she has the kitchen back. This room is close to a constant 69F. The rattle of the airlock is a soothing addition to the feel of the room ;)

    found a cool brewers club "Whales" out of Woodbridge. This might be cool being that I'll be brewing beer as well. But, I havent found a wine specific club in the Middlesex area.

    I put a heating blanket under a towel against the coldest side of the primary. Temp on that side is up to 68F. The blanket is on low. I'm checking periodically to note any temp changes as night falls. So far a steady 68F.

    Is there such a thing? Would be cool to find/start a local club that gets together shoot the shit face to face. Hold events. Maybe do the field trip thing every now and then. I don't know just checking. Anybody know of such a thing in Jersey?

    How would I remedy this with the heating blanket idea? How would I know what the temp is with out taking a temp reading from the must? I'm using a cheesy digital clock style thermometer that I have just next to the primary.

    WineXpert My first Merlot

    Temp question.... The area I have to work fluctuates in temp from 62 to 66 F. Is this too cold? If I need to up the heat, is there a good way to use a heating blanket on low perhaps to get the heat up?

    Welcome! You're in great hands here. Just started the hobby/obsession a couple days ago with a Winexpert SI French Merlot. I dont think I would have started so quickly if it hadnt been for this forum; Wade and CPFan are great helps. Thanks to everyone on the forum.

    thanks wade I'm noticing tiny air bubbles in the air lock. also barely touched the lid and the air lock burped. Are those signs that the process has begun? Also, how vigorously are you stirring the must (30seconds/every two days)? I picked up a stirring drill attachment. Should I be using this...
